Not in India, but my mum and her sisters all lived in halls when they were at uni.. and this was 30-odd years ago..
I don’t think it’s considered a big deal for a lot of ppl nowadays if there’s a practical reason such as education or for a work opportunity.. I have a cousin from ‘back home’ who moved to China on her own, likewise I have a few female cousins who’ve moved to the US to study and one who is planning to come here to London..
I know of many desi girls here in the UK who lived away for uni but the majority return back to their parents’ homes afterwards until they marry..
