my friend just named his daughter Amelia
His other is called Mountaha..which means the highest point in heaven :)
I heard it on peace TV recently too and i love it!
is amelia a muslim name?
hehe, i think like that too sometimes
i wouldn’t be able to name my future a kid the name of someone who i know
Re: Girl Names
I was discussing these names with my mum and we too think that although Leila is a lovely name, the way pakistanis pronounce it can ruin it....i mean i can just imagine the way FIL will say it. So although it's still on my list it's moved down a bit.
I'm now down to:
Ayzah
Inaya
I still like Arooj but not many people do....
^Inaya is a really pretty name...
ohhh and i like the name Maya, i have also seen it spelled Mayah..
Re: Girl Names
I don't understand what it is about the desi pronounciation of Layla/Leyla/Leila that people find to harsh or "paindoo". Maybe I don't know the correct one.
Re: Girl Names
^ i agree! i'm very confused. can someone phonetically put it down here?
Re: Girl Names
In Arabic:
Is it "Layla" like Eric Clapton would sing it?
Is it a bit softer vowel sound, like "L-eh-la"?
Is it a bit different, Leyla, sort of like "L-aye-la"?
Is it something different?
Re: Girl Names
Lay-ler/lay-la would sound the closest.
Desis ruin it by making it sound like they are singing that song 'laila oh laila...aisi tu laila..something something'. In punjabi it would sound as if you are asking someone to take something.
Re: Girl Names
so, desi's make it sound like it rhymes with "mela" as in, dirty... correct?
leila mela? (sorry, sahar, couldn't think of another rhyming word!)
i see.
i actually like that version!
i think layla is not very friendly on the tongue with the stronger "lay" sound as in "lay's chips".
and i've always pronounced layla tul qadar, for instance, as "leila rhymes with mela".
as "leila rhymes with mela".

hahahaha

Yes that's exactly what i mean...my inlaws speak punjabi they would say it like they are asking you to take something and yeah it would soo sound like malah as in dirty hahahahahahahaha!!!
Re: Girl Names
Also what is the proper way of pronouncing Inaya is it Enaya or Anaya?
Re: Girl Names
^whts the meaning of the name its sounds really nice.
I just burst out laffing at that line.. and now everyone in the office is thinking I’m a weirdo…

Sparrow.. Inaya and Enaya would be the same (say them both fast).. With Anaya, the “A” is pronoucned more and doesn’t sound right
I have a friend who called her daughter Aizzah.. I think that’s how she spelt it.
Some other names that pop to mind
Maymunah - I love this name, plus the spelling just “looks” lovely too.. (say it slowly and listen to it rolllll off your tongue)
Malaikah/Malaika
Maya
Laiba
Areesha
Sumaiya (an oldie, but a goodie)
Hafizah
Faizah
Zariyah
Amiera/Ameira
Medina
Zuleikah
Re: Girl Names
This is slightly off topic but.. what do you think to really western names for children? For example, Adam, both a Muslim and English name. Maya, Aaliyah, Sarah etc etc. Would it be weird if there was a kid that plain and obviously looked Desi but had such an "English" name?
... if that makes any sense?
Re: Girl Names
wow i found this thread from 2008 it’s about the name Inaya…i wonder if amelie decided to use it or not?
