ABBOTTABAD: ****
It may have been a mere misplaced dot that led to accusations of blasphemy against a Christian eighth-grader, whose miniscule error led to her expulsion from school and uproar amongst local religious leaders.
Faryal Bhatti, a student at the Sir Syed Girls High School in Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) colony Havelian, erroneously misspelt a word in an Urdu exam while answering a question on a poem written in praise of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The word in question was ‘laanat’ instead of ‘naat’ – an easy error for a child to make, as the written versions of the words are similar.
According to the school administration and religious leaders who took great exception to the hapless student’s mistake, the error is ‘serious’ enough to fall within the realm of blasphemy, Saturday.
Spelling out her punishment
On Thursday, Faryal’s Urdu teacher was collecting the answer sheets from her students when she noticed the apparently offensive word on her pupil’s sheet. The teacher, Fareeda Bibi, reportedly summoned the Christian girl, scolded her and beat her. Her punishment, however, did not end here. When Faryal’s class fellows learnt of the alleged blasphemy, the teacher brought the principal’s notice to the matter, who further informed the school management.
In the meanwhile, the news spread throughout the colony. The next day, male students of the POF colony school as well as certain religious elements took out a rally, demanding the registration of a criminal case against the eighth-grader and her expulsion from the area.
Prayer leaders within the community also condemned the incident in their Friday sermons, asking the colony’s administration to not only take action against Faryal but her entire family. In the wake of the increasing tensions, Managing Director POF Colony Havelian Asif Siddiki called a meeting of colony-based ulemas and school teachers to discuss the situation. The girl and her mother were asked to appear before the meeting, where they explained that it was a mere error, caused by a resemblance between the two words. The two immediately apologised, adding that Faryal had no malicious intentions.
In a move that was apparently meant to pacify the religious elements clamouring for action against the teenage ‘blasphemer’, the POF administration expelled her from the school on Saturday. Faryal was not the only one who got in trouble for her spelling error, however, as her mother, Sarafeen Bhatti, who was a staff nurse at the POF Hospital Havelian for several years, was immediately transferred to POF Wah Cantonment Hospital.
Decision applauded
While talking to The Express Tribune, Maulana Alla Dita Khateeb of Gol Masjid praised the decision of the POF colony administration, claiming that he had personally seen the answer sheet in question. He further went on to say that he had met the girl himself, who had apologised for the word used in error. Asked whether the incident still fell within the realm of blasphemy and whether Faryal deserved expulsion when she had misspelt the word unintentionally, Khateeb said that although he was unclear about the intentions of the girl, the word she had used was sacrilegious.
The managing director of POF Colony was not available for comment.

This is totally ridiculous. In urdu script, as one can see, نعت لعنت لغت - it is very easy to make a mistake like this.

In conventional faith systems, it’s God who protects man. For these radicals, it’s the other way around. There ought to be a special punishment for the lunacy of assuming your God to be so insecure as to require you to protect His honour from an eight-grader.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) forgave the old woman in Mecca who threw garbage at him, and prayed for mercy for the people of Ta’if who threw stones at him. In his name, we now persecute children who make spelling mistakes. God help us.

This is the country where a person who wrongly recites Surah Ikhlaas gets to be an interior minister, and an eight grader who unintentionally makes a mistake in spelling gets accused of blasphemy.

Have they completely gone bonkers?

Re: Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error

i'm **NOT**** commenting on the *incident* which is obviously *ridiculous*.

i'm gonna say something from the *'linguistic'* point of view. there is no the words *"lanat" and "na't"* [as handwritten in urdu] is quite different. they are written like this when they are typed:

la'nat = لعنت
na'at = نعت****

lafz-e-"la'anat لعنت]" meN Harf-e-"ai'n" aur "te" ke beech ek *"shosha [curve"* hai...jab k lafz-e-"na'at [نعت] meN koii shosha nahiiN...they look different...it's NOT just a matter of 'placing a DOT' at a wrong place like is the case in:

***maHram محرم]
mujrim مجرم]
*

Re: Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error

^yes I wondered about that too....both words are quite different when written. But obviously the kid's writing would have been hasty and they do end up putting more 'shoshay' lol as our teachers called it accidently.

Honestly am appalled at making this big a deal out of it. At the same time am thinking our media too loves to hype up such incidents much more.

Re: Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error

**lol...shoshay YES! :)

i agree...but we don't know what EXACTLY she wrote. it could be clearly ascertain what her intentions by what she wrote before and after that word...we are just concentrating on this word. i dunno...Allah KNOWS best.

***it is indeed ridiculous to go after a kid.*

Re: Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error

Only if she was retarded , intoxicated or gone insane will she dare to write something intentionally in a military owned school. Those who were agitating , that teacher , the administrator , the principal all are gone bonkers . I would be very scared to put my feet in that colony of insane people.

Re: Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error

^I feel that way about the entire country. I would get killed over something so lame. :smack:

Re: Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error

Re: Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error

‘One shosha between ‘Ayen’ and ‘tay’ in Naat can make Naat read as Laanat (if a person would like to read that as Laanat) ... a very basic mistake any child can make.’

Both words are similar when written in Urdu (or Arabic). Only difference is a ‘shosha’ after ‘ayen’ in word ‘Naat’ that kids could easily put (separating ‘Ayen’ from ‘tay’ with ‘shosha’ in between) and we can misread ‘naat’ as ‘laanat’. It is because shosha of noon (first letter in Naat) is then taken as laam and extra shosha after ayan as noon where dot for noon (first letter taken as laam) is then taken as dot for shosha after ayen ... and we get word that can be read as ‘Laanat’.

Fact is that it is not fault of this little girl but fault is with Pakistani brainless fanatic ‘Kharjees’ ... who do not think of Prophet (SAW) as Rahmat-ul-lil-Alaameen ... rather for these Nahanjaaz douzakhi people, whenever reading (or talking of) Rahmat-ul-lil-Alaameen they add a dot over letter ‘Ray’ in Rahmat ... then act accordingly trying to portray Prophet (SAW) according to their own laanati thinking. These people should get sued for Blasphemy and should be given severe punishment for what they are doing with the name, reputation and person of Prophet (SAW) who was Rahat-ul-lil-Alaameen and not Zahmat-ul-lil-Alaameen as these Khabees want world to believe.

Re: Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error

... and then we complain about natural calamities like dengue fever, floods and earth quakes. Ofcourse, these are punishments from Allah on such deeds that we endorse as a nation.

Re: Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error

WTH?

Re: Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error

ANd if the girl was Muslim, there would be no question of accusing her of blasphemy or of punishing the entire family -- it would be the obvious spelling or orthographic error that it is. What Christian in Pakistan is going to purposely poke the bear? Ridiculous!!

Re: Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error

^Yes, exactly! Which is why the current system is so dangerous for the nonmuslim minorities in Pakistan. Phir jab secularism ki baat karo to they turn a blind eye to things like this.
