not sure how much you are looking to spend but....
my sis is about that age...she is into jewelry (preferably diamonds), designer bags, gadgets (ie iPhone, blackberry, iPods etc)....spa gift certs are always nice as well.
P.S judging by this thread I have come to the conclusion that men do not have the slightest clue as to what they should gift women. tsk tsk what a shame!

I find that theatre/show or concert tickets work well.
It's something to do.....
The spa certificate works well with the younger crowd.....like in their twenties because this is often something they can't or won't afford for themselves. Most women in their late 30s and early 40s have already enjoyed luxuries like exclusive spas...in fact these have likely become a part of their routine. Plus....spas are fun when you do it as a couple and that might become a bit pricey for a gift.....

- A dessert cooking book
- One of those home fragrance oil kits
- A jewelry box or a travel jewelry box
- A subscription to a magazine
- Make a basket of delicious foods, (cheese and crackers, jam, biscuits, exotic candy, different types of tea's, throw in your best recipes which your okay with sharing, and chocolate) this can be done with any budget.
- Do yourself: hand dipped strawberries in white and milk chocolate

Unless your a housewife, I have yet to meet a working woman who is in her 30s-40s and is a spa regular. Most young people are not able to afford it and when they grow older, other things become more imp then yourself. This is the perfect time to get away from family and job and have time all to yourself!

Oh i said housewife becuase they HAVE the time to do such things compared to the working women. Thats how it is here, I really don't know if it applies everywhere else.
