You’re right, it needs to have scales to be halal, with the exception of shellfish. Whales do not have scales, so that would be a :nono:

Dolphin is fish. Dolphin lives in water. When was the last time you saw dolphin grazing in your backyard?

Islam is not about biological families of species, so dont worry about that classification. Go with what you can see and know even without a college degree.
