These days I have been hearing talks of doing a Ghod Barai? Isn’t that an indian thing rather than a paki thing. Yes I do know there is no religous background on this, but just in terms of culture/tradition. What is Ghod Barai? All I know is Moomy to be sits there as they pass fruit/nuts thru her lap?
I can’t get any exact info from anyone in my family, cuz apparently family is in process of some surprise, I can tell but I just can’t tell what it will be and when…grr I hate surprises…

In shaadi.. the Mehndi rasam is also a hindu tradition, n normally there's only the mayun in pakistan.. so if ppl have no problem wid mehndi.. y should b there a problem wid ghod bharai..?

Like I said, I am not asking people to define it as Hindu/Cultural tradition, THAT I AM AWARE OF.....but if anyone has ideas as to what the function actually consists of?

well a typical baby shower in USA is when friends and family get together and (try to) surprise the mommy-to-be with a party. Gifts for baby are given, everything a new mommy will need. Of course, there are also a couple of "naughty" gifts, sexy mommy lingerie etc. Usually, someone will make a big hat with all the bows from all the gifts and someone else writes down every word that the mommy-to-be says as she is opening gifts. Once gifts are done, the "recorder" person tells a story...."Mommy to be went to hospital to deliver her baby and this is what she said...." and then reads all the comments that mommy-to-be said while opening gifts...its really very corny but can also be quite hysterically funny. Also, theres good food, good wishes and just a good time with the gals. No worries, just enjoy!

at a desi baby shower i believe they put fruit and nuts in the girls lap.. its a sign of being "fruitful" and having loads of kids... something along those lines...
then people feed the girl ladoos shadoos (or ferrerro rochers (sp?)) in our case..

thanks, i thought ghod barai is different from a typical american baby shower. I know how the baby shower goes, I planned my best friend's shower less than a year ago. :) Was just wondering about the ghod barai if its different, cuz as someone mentioned I heard of passing fruit/nuts thru the lap of the mommy to be. Well in any case thank sfor all the info. I like the typical baby shower better where u register at babies r us :)

Afro I have been to only one gaud bharai and one of the rasms they did that i recall is putting a platter of fruit in front of the mother-to-be and she has got to pick anyone she feels like eating and that supposedly tells what gender the baby is! Other than that I don;t remember much.

haha, not really, but u know how everything that happens is a sign! Pregnant ladies and more than them others around them look too hard for signs. Along those lines they take a guess at the baby's gender based on what the woman picked! I found it amusing though cos anyone who has been to one of these events and knows what fruits indicate what gender, how do u expect them to pick a fruit without that letting the knowledge effect their decision? (Its probably more along sadzz post though which I just read btw :D)

An interesting way to determine baby's sex, that i get from everyone at work is... If your belly is growing forward but not sideways then its a boy....but if yor belly is growing all around and ur getting really wide...then its a girl...don't laugh.. When 3-4 people told me this, I simply laughed...but get this most people in my job guess right that it was a boy...based just on fact that im all belly and popping forward...go figure
