Getting furniture from Pakistan...

Re: Getting furniture from Pakistan...

I Love pakistani woodcarved furniture!

Re: Getting furniture from Pakistan...

I wouldnt get furniture from another country, when we moved out of canada for 3 years we took all except furniture, few expats we talked to told us the hassel of caring and fixing the furniture is not worth it, esp due to humidity and climate change etc. i know a lot of furniture that is sold in NA markets is made there but it is done for commercial purposes and with strict standards.

The shipping process is not too complicated as long as you find a good reliable shipper, usually when you share a container the shipper should make a skit or wooden box and place the skit in there to protect it. The glass/crystal/china items have to be packed properly, when we shipped our stuff there and back all stayed intact except 1-2 very fine crystal bowl(they were paper thin at the edges)

so it is doable, just pros and cons needed to be evaluated IMO

Re: Getting furniture from Pakistan...

Re: Getting furniture from Pakistan…

Hi Everyone,

There is some very good furniture in Pakistan due to

  1. The availability of wood
  2. Good highly skilled carpentry and carving professionals
  3. A long tradition of wood art and art in general that lends itself well to furniture design

As mentioned above there are a number of issues getting furniture out of Pakistan into the West.

  1. Shipping charges are very high for one-time (personal use) shippers.
  2. 80-90% of Pakistan furniture is of a low quality not worth importing to the West. It will have that cheap “freshy” type of look.
  3. Good quality furniture can be expensive, and will still have some issues, poor fittings, cheap foam, not passing western regulations etc.
  4. Working with suppliers in Pakistan can be difficult especially if you are UK based, delays are very common.

Given the above scenario, I looked into starting a service importing furniture into the UK from Pakistan. I started this process about a year a go and hopefully will have a little shop set up in London in 2 months. I will mostly be selling Sofas, Beds, Chairs and Wardrobes, and also include some handmade carpets.

My prices will be as follows

Sofas - Around 2K for 3+2. Sofas will have exposed carved sheesham wood frames with a choice of contemporary fabrics. I am using high quality foam that passes UK regulations that I send over to Pakistan. Sofas can be customized (size, fabric etc) and will have to be ordered.

Beds - Around 1-1.5K for solid Sheesham wood Superking size bed. This is a premium quality item and will last generations.

Chairs - 200-300 each.

Wardrobes - 650-1k. Made of Pine, Diyar (Cedar) or Sheesham. These are 100% solid wood wardrobes with detailed carving on the frontage.

Handknotted Carpets. Prices can vary but a very good carpet (16x16 = 300 knots per square inch) will cost around 2k for a 6x9 foot size. This type of carpet can last generations. Persian carpets of this quality can be found in many high-end traditional (upper-class) western homes.

You can go to Pakistan and get these things yourself. However, you wont get the piece-of-mind of dealing with a UK based supplier and you can quite easily run into a number of difficulties. The service I provide is to find the types of products that people will like in the West, with typical “Desi” style carvings and designs on solid wood, not really modern or minimalist designs.

My company is called Indus Furniture and if it’s not an issue I will add my website address here once it is up and running.
