Gender-specific Jobs

Job discrimination on the basis of one’s gender still exists in the West and is really widespread in the desi community as well.

I’ve heard a few people say that they agree with labelling certain jobs as “suitable for men” or “suitable for women” if there’s a genuine reason for doing so… for example, the work of a builder is too challenging for a woman as it requires a lot more strength and energy … Similarly, nursing is traditionally associated with women as they’re naturally caring and loving (sh’up men, we ARE affectionate! :snooty: )

Do you guys agree with the concept of gender-specific jobs?

Also, ladies would you be ok with being, lets say, a bus driver/a construction worker? And gentlemen, would you be ok with being a nurse/a beautician? :faizy: why or why naat?

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

Shall I get out my ‘kitchen’ jokes

Jokes aside, no sorry, I’d never be a male nurse. :chai:

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

^ What's wrong with male nurses?

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

All jobs should be for women to make women 'happy'. :D

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

jokes k sath sath questions bhi answer kejiye na... Syraa would u be ok with being a builder? And diwana would u be ok with being a beautician? : p

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

Yes, if they let me ‘make up’ women. :hehe:

Anyhow, there ARE some jobs more suitable for a particular gender. Nothing wrong with that. Even though the bias should not be there but in practical world and especially in business world gender assignment helps.

There is a ridiculous movement by women to try to prove they can do everything. Even though most men do not fight for some jobs which are more suitable for women like secretaries, front desk person etc.

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

Well women wouldn’t have the felt the need to prove themselves if you men hadn’t made fun of em all the time :nahi:

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

Perhaps this is one excuse they may have.

Many men are made fun of their ‘manly skills and hobbies’, do we see them fighting for feminine jobs?

I think the ideas like this get implanted as being extremists. Meanng, at the beginnng the women movements may be justifed to get jobs but then they try to show they can do everything what men do. Looks like either being too impressed by men or this idea of gender equality runnung beyond some sensible boundaries.

Fortunately this is not so big deal in practical life. Like I said men do not care for many jobs themselves which are suitable for women.

Am I hired as a beautican?

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

hmmm u got some good points there… And men might not have fought for the feminine jobs but they have definitely stayed away from them… Just like Shak said, he wouldn’t wanna be a male nurse… Men feel its demeaning to work in female-dominated industries whereas women feel honoured to work in male-dominated industries… :hmmm:

Only if u post this smiley :kp:

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

There are so many good male nurses already. Yes there are some jobs which are more suitable for women lke nursing, kindergarten teachers or administrative assistants. Again there may be some overlap.

LOL..

Soching ke who would I use my first ‘victim’ as a beautician.

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

u didn’t post that smiley… too demeaning for you? :emmy:

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

Nope not at all..

Other day this woman who saw me at work did this:kp: to me…

Happy? Now do I get the job? :hehe:

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

Not that women are not capable of work which are suitable for men, but is it really necessary for them to prove is the queston.

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

a woman did that to u? aaaahahahahah diwana ki choti choti khawahishein!!! :omg:

Ok u get the job … I’m too nice… Your first assignment is to give us a makeup tutorial in this thread:

plz&thankyou! :smooth:

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

the real question is, can men and women get away with working in an industry that is dominated by the opposite gender? Will the society (especially desi) accept this? Your parents, for example, would they be happy if u were to work as a beautician? The aim is to break these barriers and allow men and women to work in whatever field they want to... without being discriminated against...

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

Koi Paabandi Hai Kia Meri nannhi nannhi khwahishon par? :naraz:

Thanks for the job. Will try my best to come up to the great expectations…Please come and rescue me if I get kicked out by women in there… :hehe:

See here is a little problem.

Why should there be a reason to break any barrier when these are not even barriers.

These are rather expectations based on some wisdom time tested.

I am not defending ‘discrimination’ based only on gender basis by any means here.

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

By barriers I mean discrimination… stereotypes… These shouldn’t exist… But its so widespread among desis…

Well done on taking up the job of making us look pwetty :chilly: t’is very very tought I must warn ya!

Now, next in line are the following:

1: Shak09 for a male nurse

2: NaMaan for a kaam wala maasa.

3: CM for secretary.

4: TLK bhai for a homemaker!

Let me think of some more … : p

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

I don't think there should be gender specific jobs. I have personally seen female truck drivers in the US, I have seen male beauticians too which do amazing make up on brides etc. You never know where talent for something can come from. Male or female. Though traditionally it's always been male labourers etc but up until a few years ago, females too used to help in house building in many villages in Pakistan. I think the choice should be left to the individual, instead of limiting certain professions for certain gender/sex. Also there are many male nurses in hospitals around the world and also male OBN/GYNs too. There is nothing wrong with that.

Re: Gender-specific Jobs

^ yup and did u know, in Pakistan, there’s 10 times more male gynae’s than female ones :hayaa:
