Gen. ZIA UL-HAQ

In 1979, when General Mohammod Zia Ul-Haq executed his elected predecessor, Zulfigar Ali Bhutto, and declared martial law, drugs were unknown in Pakistan, but by 1984 Pakistan was furnishing 70% of the world’s high grade heroin. That same year, George Bush addressed a group of Pakistani officials and praised the government of President Zia for its anti-narcotics program. However, among the guests listening to Vice-President Bush were many high ranking officials with links to one of the most lucrative heroin syndicates in the world. Although the US government had some very capable drug enforcement agents in Pakistan, they did not break even one narcotics case there. A senior Pakstani narcotics officer said he had concluded the US was unwilling to press for arrests that might embarrass a government so closely tied to Washington. Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger called Pakistan a “frontline state” defending "free people everywhere’. That may explain why despite its unsavory record of jailing and torturing dissidents, Pakistan under Zia was the largest recipient of US. aid, receiving over $3 billion in 1982, of which over half was for weapons. Zia eventually lifted martial law and called for general elections in 1985. However, many of his outspoken opponents were jailed during the elections and for several days afterward. Zia died in a mysterious plane crash in August 1988 .

any thoughts?

Re: Gen. ZIA UL-HAQ

^ Taliban were able to curb most of opium growth. They were branded oppressive regime, later on after OBL took refuge there they were harshly criticized even if a mosquito was killed. After US took over Afghanistan, opium trade/growth has skyrocketed.... any thoughts?

Re: Gen. ZIA UL-HAQ

If you are wanting solutions to the drug problem, look towards China, they punished the drug users severly, it completely eliminated the opium trade in China. When there was no demand, the supply was not needed it went elswhere like USA.

Re: Gen. ZIA UL-HAQ

but he also left behind the Bibi :bummer:

Re: Gen. ZIA UL-HAQ

^as revenge :D

Re: Gen. ZIA UL-HAQ

Captain 1,

"but he also left behind the Bibi"

Bibi was born well before Zia's era, when ZAB predicted that she would take his place ultimately. When first time she came to Pakistan in eighties, she and her mother were arrested and tortured by Zia. Due to World pressure he had no choice but to release these ladies. Indra Gandhi was very much vocal and told Zia, if he was really a “man”, he should release these women from prison who could do least harm to his most powerful rule.

Yes he definitely left behind ALTAF HUSSAIN and his criminal MQM besides drug lords, Mullahs and Jehadis.

Zia-ul-Haq declared himself as Momin and Khalifa. He ruled Pakistan till his death would have ruled 110 years more had he not killed in 1988.

I wonder why people here condemning him now, he was Mard-e-Momin when he was alive and in power. All media, PPP opposition parties leading Jamat-e-Islami, MQM, Terik-e-Isqalal etc were blindly supporting him. Not a single soul had to challenge his rule and asked him to step down. What he was doing everyone approved him. And now this kind of nonsense post after his death.. Pakis are the biggest hypocrites in the world. They are rightly treated like **** everywhere in the world.

Re: Gen. ZIA UL-HAQ

I don't know about you and whether you werre around and if so what action did you take. As for me I opposed his rule as much as I could. Get London's "TheTimes" of July 4 1979 and you will see an advert by me which I took out against his rule. Also I organised a number of demonstrations against him when he visited UK. I was unable to visit Pakistan during the rule of this Shaitan as I was refused visa. When I was in Saudi and working in the same hospital as his son and son in law, I opposed them there as well and refused to ever call them at my house when people all around were dying to invite them because they happened to be the president's son. His younger son once asked me why I was so opposed to his father, I told him to his face that his father was a moron and a murderer. This might not be a lot but I opposed his rule wherever I could.

let me know what you did.

Re: Gen. ZIA UL-HAQ

Ehsan Bhai,

:Salute:

Re: Gen. ZIA UL-HAQ

The guy is dead, leave him alone. He will be Judged. Dont dig old graves, instead think how you can make Pakistan better. What can YOU do? What have YOU done?

Re: Gen. ZIA UL-HAQ

EXCELLENT! :k:

Re: Gen. ZIA UL-HAQ

Ehsan,

In 1979 I was very much in Pakistan and a government servant. Though I was not as active as you were according your post but always opposed his actions whenever discussions erupted regarding his ruling the country in meetings and gatherings. Under the laws I was not allowed to held demonstration against the dictator if I want to live alive in Pakistan. The least I could do was I did vote against him in his fraudulent referendum of 1983.

You were lucky that you were denied Paki visa other wise you would have landed in a jail with punishment of 20 stripes for opposing so called "Amirul-Momineen". People who were shouting "Jiay Bhutto", turned to "Jiay Zia" in just fifth flog!!!!

But I assure you majority were either kept quite or praising the way he was ruling the country. Had he not killed by his CREATOR he would still be ruling Pakistan.
