Gelatin

is it O.K to take a medicine (prescribed) that has gelatin in it??

Re: Gelatin

if there is no alternative and a medicine is inevitable to take, it is allowed.

So, Centrum that has geletin is a :nono1:

Re: Gelatin

:hmmm:

Re: Gelatin

AQ: not talkin about centrum .. thats y I said (prescribed). I have to take this medicine orally .. its a gel. Now I don’t know whether after findin out that it has a gelatin in it whether I should keep on takin it or should go for another visit to doc’s office or get something else … as I really need to take it

Re: Gelatin

^ prescribed medicines are fine, if its a 'capsule' then you can remove the medicine inside and take it with water etc. Also you can call your doctor if a 'replacement' is available, if he says yes then you can check with pharmacist if a gelatin free prescription is available.

Re: Gelatin

Check if a gelatine free alternative is available. I did that when my doctor prescribed me Zirtec for my hayfever... I asked him for an alternative and got Clarityn instead.

Re: Gelatin

just wanted to inform u that the purpose of a capsule is to keep the medicine packed inside the capsule. There has been cases when ppl took the medicine out of capsule and ended up getting cuts and blisters in their mouth.

Re: Gelatin

its a big misconception that gelatin comes only from pig, gelatin comes from soya beans too. That gelatin is being used in candies and other edible stuff including alot of medicines......... u think jews in america would sit quiet over stuff like that.....they are as strict as muslims when it comes down use of pig residuals.

Re: Gelatin

^ ditto .....gelatin comes from plant extracts also

Re: Gelatin

Wrong. Pectin is the plant extract that can be used in place of gelatin; however, Pectin is always labelled as such.

There is no such thing as plant gelatine.

Re: Gelatin

^ and plus the soy thing is SOY LECITHIN... Lecithin can be from animal source too.. so if it does not say SOY before it, then it is doubtful

Re: Gelatin

wow! didn't know that. thanks!

Re: Gelatin

Could be, the trick is to dissolve the medicine in water then drink it, probably more water should be drunk right after so all of it goes down.

Re: Gelatin

as Maddy already said, when they use non-animal gelatin they clearly say/label it, when it is not mentioned then animal source is default/assumed.

Re: Gelatin

true, however u cant be too sure if the geletin used in various products is made out of a plant or not since it doesnt say specifically where it came from.

EMM.... I recently was given a prescription that contained gelatin. I simply asked for a gelatin-free alternative.
