not true - I've called companies that label gelatin in their ingredients and they've said its from a plant source. You can have plant gelatin, and it can be referred to as just "gelatin" in packaging.
Secondly, don't take out the medicine from the capsule and swallow it. I don't know about rashes or cuts, but you're definitely altering the dosage you're getting by doing that. And gelatin is used for packaging for reasons of absorption and digestion of the medicine. Don't remove the gelatin packaging.
Likewise there is some alcohol in medicines. But if that's the only medical syrup available to take care of your problem, then you need to take it.
What might be more complicated is you perscribing a gelatin-based medicine to a muslim patient when an alternative was available and you didn't take the time to check for it (which is understandable, because its hard to memorize all the various drugs and non-gelatin alternatives).
