there is a reason that those infants undergo corrective surgery.
i) due to mistakes during circumcision (for example, a drunk rabbi), a boy's wee wee is cut off. there was sucha case, and the parent's decided to turn him into a girl, but as he grew up, he was not comfortable with his female identity. once he realized the truth, he got surgery done and lived a life as a man
ii) their genitalia are not clear...ie whether the child is boy or girl. in that case, in many cases, the DNA is checked to determine the gender. when the true, genetic identity is determined, the genitalia is tweaked.
surgery is not recommended anymore. it is true that is much more easier to label a child with a gender when he or she is born, but once a child grows up, there are emotional issues that arise. therefore, it is suggested that the child should be aware of the issue and once he grows up, he should decide which side of the spectrum he wants to take.
there is a specific, genetic gender that is given to each and every child at the moment of birth. due to circumstances that Allah chooses, the thing that really matters to our society, genitalia, can go awry. your view point of gender is just one of the view points in psychology about gender. biology is not a separate issue when it comes to a child. it is part of the equation. to separate is impossible. all the enlightened, modern psychologists now know there is not such thing as a nature-nurture debate.
