Gay Indians March.

Mashallah India is certainly making progress by leaps and bounds and catching on with the western standards and culture fast.

=================================================

Hundreds of gay rights supporters have marched in the Indian capital, Delhi, for the first time. **Gays, lesbians and transgender people gathered in the central Connaught Place area in what was the country’s largest ever display of gay pride.**Activists also marched in the cities of Calcutta, which has seen similar events in the past, and Bangalore. The marchers were demanding an end to discrimination in a society where homosexuality is still illegal. The gay pride marches are a global event held in the last week of June every year.**They **commemorate the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York which broke out after police raided a gay bar.

‘Celebrating sexuality’

Marchers in Delhi on Sunday shouted “long live queer movement” and danced merrily and waved the rainbow flag, revered by sexual minorities around the world.“This is for the first time Delhi is organising a pride festival to celebrate sexuality and people of all sexualities,” student Mario Depeno was quoted by news agency Reuters as saying. “Gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender and even straight are coming together here to talk and to celebrate, it’s a party, to celebrate themselves,” he said.

In the eastern city of Calcutta, thousands of people gathered to watch the march which has now become an annual event. “This is a space, this is a public space, this is a space for reclaiming,” Reuters quoted one participant, Anindya, as saying.** “This is a rally to reclaim our space, the right to live without violence, without coercion, the right to live freely with equality and with dignity,”** he said. Homosexuality is illegal in India and various groups are lobbying the government and the courts for a change in the law, which has been in place for more than 145 years.

Brought in under British rule, the legal system recognises gay and lesbian relationships “as an unnatural offence”. In some Indian states people have taken their own lives because they have found the law unbearable. The US-based group Human Rights Watch has also expressed concern about India’s colonial-era law.

Re: Gay Indians March.

I've heard that Ahmedinejad claimed there are no gays in Iran. Are you guys claiming that in Pakistan too?

Re: Gay Indians March.

NEW DELHI, India -

Men wore sparkling saris, women wore rainbow boas and hundreds of people chanted for gay rights in Calcutta, Bangalore and New Delhi yesterday in the largest display of gay pride in the deeply conservative country where homosexual acts are illegal.

I bet there’s a envious crowd in Pakistan wishing they could ‘come out’ and celebrate too!

New Dehli portraying itself the next destination for Gay toursim.

A large number of foreigners also took part in the pride in Delhi.

Ashley John, for instance, was an American tourist walking along with hundreds of other supporters waving the rainbow flag and singing slogans.

“Considering this is the first time that Delhi is having a gay pride, the turnout is quite impressive. I was informed about this by a friend and I am glad that I came,” John told IANS.

Nina and Annie, two tourists from Britain, also marched. “It’s such a fantastic spectacle!

there is a difference btw Democracy n Besharmi!

Re: Gay Indians March.

I'm so happy for them. I hope this trend continues!

Re: Gay Indians March.

whats wrong with it? Atleast in India , ppl are not afraid of follow what they believe or what they choose to follow. In pakistan mullahs would have cut their throat.

An asinine post with no basis in fact. Gays are not persecuted in Pakistan either and you can read both Herald and Newsline that have been doing stories on this periodically since the 90s. The whole crossdressing phenomena for example has never invited the condemnation as it has in the west (I mean Heejras have been around for how long and they actually come to dance at weddings) But the point is that homosexuality is simply not an issue in this part of the world since homophobia has never been that big here either (There is no aversion to physicality amongst people of the same sex as there is in the West). Moreover, this and other antics together with the rhetoric being used come across an attempt to be more westernized than the west, whiter than white etc. which actually does you guys more harm than good because increasingly you seem like some pathetic wannabes following popular trends in the hopes of getting kudos rather than any genuine movement at social evolution.

Re: Gay Indians March.

Good for them! :D

do u know what bagvad geeta says, it doesn't say anything about sex,

and one more things did they say they all are hindus, there may be muslims, sikhs, buddhist, christians, jains and anything

don't take it in a bad way, but most of the hijras in maharasta, ap, karnataka are muslims

1 billion people marched?

tell this to your militants, these gay and lesbians are way better than your terrorist groups at least these gays don't harm others, they've right to speak what they want, even a Muslim eunuch is better than pak based terrorist mullahs coz they don't kill others and that is also "Allah ke naam pe"
