Sunil Gavaskar today suggested or hinted that Sachin Tendulkar might need to be talked to so that he will start playing more match-winning innings.
Gavaskar said as much on television and also wrote along the same lines in a British newspaper today.
Gavaskar said it is high time India started winning Test matches in South Africa, Australia and England and more application is needed from top players like Tendulkar.
Gavaskar also drew a parallel on how he had to do the same thing to Kapil Dev who was getting out in the 20s and 30s after playing extremely well and facing no problems. He said that he had talked to Kapil many times in the dressing room with no effect and then finally gave him a public rebuke in a magazine article.
Gavaskar wrote that Kapil would never again get 50. Sure enough Kapil went out there and got 64 in the next Test match, Gavaskar said with a smile.
Though he did not directly suggest a public rebuke for Tendulkar, the former captain was clearly saying that some sort of pressure need to be put on Tendulkar to play more match-winning innings.
There has been various statistics-based stories in the recent past trying to show that Tendulkar often failed when it mattered most. The NatWest final has been shown as a case in point where youngsters took up the task of making an impossible win.
