What do you think it will take to get people to reconsider their driving habits?
Good question. SUV sales must be taking a hit, and I alluded to earlier recreational use of items that require fuel may also. Will we actually see a shift in how we drive or will drivers just reduce what they spend on retail and other things and put it towards increased gas expense?
Re: Gas surge to $4.00 a gallon closing in
Come on Mr. Doom & Gloom = UTD, this is all temporary... the price will come down to keep everyone by mid to late summer. So relax and enjoy the show.
Re: Gas surge to $4.00 a gallon closing in
I happen to like the high prices. If the government isn't going to do anything to wean us off foreign oil dependency, the public and private sector will do it when they are tired of the high prices.
Re: Gas surge to $4.00 a gallon closing in
maybe i can just hire illegal aliens to push my car. would be cheaper than buying gasoline :D j/s
Re: Gas surge to $4.00 a gallon closing in
You do have a valid point. It's not just about the oil being foreign, it's about finding a cleaner alternative and reconsidering our lifestyle.
I would love to see that government invest more heavily in public transport, and spend less building new roads. I understand that public transport is less feasible here because of our size, but it is doable.
I think the push towards corn-based ethanol is not a move in the right direction either. The process is just as polluting, and corn produces greater waste than sugarcane, for example. It's also driving up the cost of corn, which will in turn push up the cost of meat, poultry, and other corn based products.
Re: Gas surge to $4.00 a gallon closing in
Better hope that Hurricanes don't damage any refineries off the coast or things don't heat up in the Mid-east. Meanwhile oil companies have absolutely no incentive to increase their refinery capabilites, it would only tear down their profits. Personally I want $7.00 a gallon, maybe it would take less or more, but to induce real change to the energy sector pain needs to be widespread, hard, and sustained. big oil won't let it happen but if the perfect storm of incidents occure they might not be able to stop it.

Re: Gas surge to $4.00 a gallon closing in
Yep its around $3.75 around detroit and my wife called me during the day saying that she waiting in line for the last 15 minutes at a station that has it for $3.39....
So its going to be $4 soon and
yes 50 legal immigrants in a van might just happen.
Can you believe the idiot country boy that works with me was mocking me that I drive a nissan sentra where as he drive a big FORD F150 4X4 that he proudly fills up with $90 dollars to the tank.
We work for the big 3 so its considered unpatriotic to not buy American.
Lolz...this country needs to wake up and smell the diesel...

I may just send you a report when i find it which compares the accord camry and some chevy car to show how many parts of each were locally manufactured versus foriegn sourced and then it tels you how american some car with a chevy badge really is. That ought to shut him up.
Re: Gas surge to $4.00 a gallon closing in
$90+ to fill up 30 gallon tank in Chevy Avalanche truck! Even with it alternating between 4 and 8 cylinders, it's still 12-18 MPG!!! It ain't looking pretty!

That guy might be an idiot but I understand why he would mock your Nissan if you work at Ford, why wouldn't you support the hand that feeds you?
Re: Gas surge to $4.00 a gallon closing in
Last month I filled up my civic for $30 and drove it for two weeks without having to fill again. I drove 35 miles a day just for work. I don’t think you can beat that. Even the metro will cost you more. If I do a lot of driving over the weekend then it goes a little over a week. Even that’s not bad. :k:
Re: Gas surge to $4.00 a gallon closing in
I was listening to NPR the other day and they had a lady caller whose whole family (brother, father, uncle etc) had be working for GM for decades and she said she used to buy GM but for past 8 years she has been buying Japanese cars. She told her family that it just won’t do…the American cars will require fixing up even after 3 years while she’s been driving a Japanese car for past 5 years and did not have to take it to the auto shop for anything other than regular maintenance.
I vouch to that story. Last time I had to spend big money on my car was to replace the timing belt (which was, btw, a maintenance work not something that was broken) + major tune up. That was over two years ago. Nothing since then. The only thing that has ever broken in my car for past 8 years of ownership is the muffler which cost me around $300 couple of years ago. Show me an American car that will cost you only $300 in fix-ups in 8 years! :halo:
Re: Gas surge to $4.00 a gallon closing in
Yep my sentra takes me 320 odd miles as well but it lasts 1 week as I drive 64 miles a day :frown:

They pay me for the excellent above average work I perform. You see Mr.Dome being an immigrant engineer I have an advanced degree and work much more ethically without wasting my companies time and resources.
Thats what they pay me for. My services.
Not to buy back their cars that are poorly designed by egghead goras sitting in a nutshell environment and being given mandates by their red neck big wigs who care squat about earth's resources and how the US and bigger economies have plundered them away.
So don't tell me about the hand that feeds me. That is Allah SWT alone Who feeds me and evey other creature.
