Read that this used to be famous saying during British Raj in Punjab.
British got tough time from ‘Wahabi movement’ and many of their leaders were sent to ‘Kala Pani’.
Considering the rivalry between Wahabi movement and British, public coined these sayings to equal their score with their own rivals. Ganga Singh said to be a shopkeeper in some town and he had a tussle with a molvi and it was then said for Ganga Singh that he converted to be a Wahabi.
Any references about Wahabi Movement in sub-continent during British Raj? What were their contribution towards 1857 independence war or later in Independence movement?
Most people in wahabi movement were not wahabi, British and some of their local agents found it a convenient ploy to brand anyone wahabi who actively worked against them, the whole reshmi romaal movement was branded wahabi.
in order to rile the Arabs against their Turkish brethren, it was necessary to first create a new interpretation of Islam that would sanction such murder, but under the guise of Jihad. This new interpretation came to be known as** Wahhabism, and was founded by British agent, Mohammed Abdul Wahhab**.
isn’t it a bigger twist that I was talking about in OP. Here in sub-continent, Wahabis were anti-British and in Hejaz British are being said to introduce Wahabisim :halo:
A few months ago Chief Executive of Pakistan General Musharaf declared that overwhelming majority of Pakistanis are liberal minded people, and only one percent is ‘fundamentalists’. May be he is right as far as the percentage is concerned, but it is this very tiny minority which is calling shots. It is this one percent which has to large extent has kept the overwhelming majority in a kind of hostage.
**
This tiny minority has tremendous power and influence over masses due to its religious status and resources. If they don’t like something they can very easily declare that anti Islam, conspiracy of Jews, Hindus, America etc. They can even declare Muslim people as anti Islam, anti Pakistan or agents of so and so. Because of their control of mosques and their own media they can make many people believe that “Ganga Singh has become a Wahabi”.**
What's the difference between hayati and mamaati deobandis?
where did you hear it. I heard Dr Israr once mentioning some types, but don't think he mentioned these ones.
My tukka: hayati who are against Taliban, Mamaati who in favour of Taliban
okay.. okay.. wiki (not wikipedia) says that its ideological difference whether Prophet is alive and have links with this world or not, which lead to this Mamati and Hayaati bifurcation. God knows better

I think that's right. I was searching online for the deobandiisation of Pashtuns and I came across these terms. Hayatis believe that the prophet is alive and they go to graves as well, closer to barelvis. Mamaati's are closer to ttp ideology who seem to have strengthened over the past 40 years.
Lord Meo’s murder sent shockwaves throughout the British Empire. Forensic Investigative Teams reached Andaman and started their work there. The British Government was under the impression that this murder was part of a big conspiracy against the empire. By pure chance, a leading figure of the Tehreek e Mujahideen, Muhammad Ja’far Thanesri was serving his sentence at Andaman as well when this murder happened. The British Government was convinced that Maulvi Muhammad Jafar and other Mujahideen serving their prison sentences had somehow convinced Sher Ali to carry on this attack. Many experienced Investigative Officers were appointed this task to somehow find a link to the Mujahideen leaders. One such officer was Aishwari Prasad who was famous for embroiling Mujahideen leaders in false cases. He had gradually gained popularity with the British with his connivance and was now the Deputy Collector of Suraj Garh. Prasad tried his level best to involve the Mujahideen leaders in this case who were already serving sentences for rebelling against the British Empire.
