I can’t find guavas (amrood) here in VA so I need variations of fruit chaat that people make without the amrood. Please post some different recipes for fruit chaat here, I’m open to all suggestions.
Oh and people who are from Karachi, did you ever eat thet yummy fruit chaat sold outside Uzma shopping center/Agha’s super market… anyone got the recipe for that?
We rarely if ever put amrood in the chaat. Although my mom will sometimes add a little bit of guava juice to the chaat sometimes.
Here is what we add:
apple
peach
orange
kiwi
grapes
banana
*dates: We take pitted dates and cut them into slices and add them to the chaat. I've always loved this tradition in my family. And I haven't seen anyone else do this......but the soft/candied-like texture of the khajoors mixed in with the fruit is pleasant. We don't add the chanay to the chaat. And I like it this way, cuz it's lighter.
lemon juice....squeeze some in...and sprinkle chaat masala. Instead of lemon juice, guava juice can be used as well.
MIAinVA, I usually collect various fruits available and mix them in. There are basically two tricks that I know of that will make your Chat extra flavoury:
1- When cutting the fruits, cut the pieces really small, infact as small as you can. It enhances the taste of mixed fruit.
2- when peeling an orange, finely cut out two to three pieces of its zest.. and chop them finely. ( make sure to get the peel's orange bit only, not the white bit ) add it in the chat .. it will immediately bring that citric punch to your chat :@:
I didn't realize there were recipes/variations for fruit chaat. Mine is just apples, pears, peach/nectarine, strawberries, grapes, bananas, and pomegranite -- my favourite of all (if it's available.) Sprinkle a little bit of chaat masala and salt, Add some freshly squeezed orange juice, and voila.
oh my god, i hate this fruit chaat masala thing. Like, seriously? fruit, with masala? Uhhh.
The combination of fruit and spices is not uncommon...even outside of Desi cuisine (allspice, anise, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, etc). I don't mind chaat masala....and I think that only sprinkling cinnamon on fruit can be nice as well.
I agree with Red, Cinammon can be such a refreshing taste on fruit … or just plain lemon dressing … Chat is a very varied dish I believe …
One more variation of Chat that I simply love to bits is :
Take all the soft fruits like berries, grapes, mango, kiwi, orange, apricot, melon etc … and add fresh flavoured whipped cream in it , I use pineapple flavouring .. but change flavours and you will find a new taste every single time …
Yum Yum. I dont think anyone can make that chart at home. I mean how can you add drops of “pasina” (sweat) of those guys
but yeah KINO and AMROOD are must for top of the line chart. In case these are no available, we put almost any fruit that we can get hold off. A bit of cinnamon sugar/pwd, pinch of red chilli pwd, sugar and salt yum yum
With late Iftars , we actually eat dinner at Iftar time and then eat this fruit chat around hour or 2 later..
Thanks everyone… I’ve never tried the version with the cream, will give it a try… sounds totally unhealthy though
Guava juice is a great idea, will try that too, Thanks
Decen6chors… lol, true… that thaila wala also put some kind of imli ki chutney and chanas with the amrood and bananas, haaye I miss that chaat, it was YUMMY.
RV… yep, oranges and bananas are a must.
Fruit chaat is nothing without the chaat masala - it tastes a bit bland without it i think? I made a luush one today and it was simple - add bananas, melon, apple, two different types of grapes, mango and strawberry, add like a dash of mango juice and sprinkle with a little bit of fruit chaat - not so much tho, only a little sprinkle. Mmm was really nice! :)
ok here goes mine
apples
grapes
lots of bananas
orange juice from fresh tangerine if u can get other wise orange tang
dry apricots u have to boil them in water with suger added and then mash them in blender
