Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

As you’re all aware there is an ongoing conference being held in Tokyo. The title of the gathering is “Friends of Pakistan”. Ask any Pakistani and they will not be happy of the title because it translates into yet more begging on an international scale.

Where is the Pakistan that once inspired other nations to rise and become economic power houses? Singapore, which was once nothing but an island with majority of its revenues coming from Water Resources, is today one of the most stable countries in the world and a symbol of peace. Hardly do you hear of any sad incidents or uprising or civil disobedience in Singapore today.

Once a team of delegates was sent to Singapore in the 80s by the then General in-charge of Pakistan, Zia-ul-Haq. The purpose of the visit was to inquire and tour Singapore, look at its developmental work, and come back with a workplan to uplift Pakistan.

When the delegation met the Singapore Premiere, and asked how he had managed to transform Singapore. He just looked around at the dignitaries gathered, and smiled then asked “There was one nation that inspired me to transform Singapore. The nation was fast progressing and stood out above others in Asia. Do you gentlemen know which nation that is?” The Pakistani delegation replied in negative. With a chuckle he responded, “Gentlemen! that nation is Pakistan. I took my inspiration from a progressive Pakistan”.

It was that in the 80s, and here we are today. We have had a backwards trend of politics, economics, and development. Pakistan was indeed once one of the most progressive nations in the region.

Are we going to continue heading downwards? Leaving aside the issues we face which came to surface recently, where else have we gone wrong? What can Pakistan do, to once again stun the world with rapid progress and becoming a beacon of hope for other improvished nations?

What can we, as Pakistanis, do to rebuild our nation and build its foundations so strong that no ill-devised policies would shake its foundations?

Pakistan and Pakistanis surely do not want to beg before the world. Surely, we do not want to be dictated what our policies should be, and how to best progress. But, as long as we continue to have politician-turned-leaders whose entire mentality is that of Wealth-Gathering and personal interests, i’m afraid we’ll be stuck in this downwards spiral. It is our leaders that lead the nation, but when we elect those who cannot even lead a political party or a small gathering, how can we expect those individuals to run a nation, for the people who are at the core of it. The poor public.

Who do you see as a likely leader that will refine Pakistan’s image and make it an examplry Muslim nation as well as an example for the developed world?

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

Its rather simply where we went wrong. Its the economic polices of the past 20 years. We still focus on our agriculture as a main focus of exports, while everybody else has moved on to services. Our products do not comply with even basic SPS measures let along EU or US standards. Our main industries that get subsidies and benefits are linked to men and women in politics. Their industries are protected as Infant industries. While those that could be competitive are taxed highly. Our TV/Radio/Audio manufacturing sector is taxed at something like 70%.

You want progress. Do what Bhutto said. Ironic I am saying that but the man had it right. Fill the basic needs of the people work on issues that matter, not building new airports, building complex Export Promotion Zones.

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

I heard similar stories about Malaysia as well, look where Malaysia is now.
Our location on the map has played the biggest role in where we are right now.

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

A positive thread. At last.

We can start by being honest to whatever we do.

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

The delegation to Singapore was in 80s, their hardwork/seed must've been older. It takes more than a decade of sowing seeds, watering and hardwork to see fruits in a country. Pakistan of 60s must've inspired other countries, definitely not the Pakistan of 70s or 80s.

In 70s Pakistan started pedalling in reverse gear, 80s accelerated it. 90s we thought everybody else is going in wrong direction. In 00's we thought we can beat everyone else in the race by going faster in wrong direction and still make it to the destination.

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

Beggars are not choosers, .. Now can any Pakistani with his brain at the right place … explain to me, is their any other option we have, except licking everything what “Friends of Pakistan” has to offer?

FYI: Pakistani population is growing at a record pace but our economy is shrinking at far record pace… their are not enough jobs are producing to feed 170 million people, Pakistan is becoming a headache for rest of the world. President Zardarri said correctly, if we loose the world will loose. So please better giving us aid, coz we have no industry, we have nothing.. we are just one big fat country with alot of problems and our people are full with dignity and want respect :rotfl:, … and blah blah ..

Our military can’t even function without foreign aid, and then people like x-idiot .. oops x-general mirza aslam baig come on live tv and say “inshallah all of the foreign forces will be defeated” .. can someone shut up him.. coz of him and his alike generals we are in this shyt hole !

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

^^ We are fighting for whole world. the fight going on into our cities. If we let them open , then tell us what happens to the whole world !

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

Yes, we have problems. Huge problems. We've had them for a long time. About time we talk positively about solutions and 'run and hide' is definitely not a solution.

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

I think given our relatively modest resources, and our absolutely inept governance, Pakistanies are not terribly placed in the world. Yes our government is going around with its begging bowl every few years, and yes a lot of that money ends up where it shouldnt, but if you think of the average guy, we are not so different from our neighbours.

I dont think 'leaders' will bring growth to the country. I think we need more entrepreneurship, which will happen, and is happening, atleast in urban areas. To enable that the govt can atleast need better basic infrastructure.

To give an example, tech. startup companies in Pakistan are hindered by the fact that not only do we not have a strong IT backbone, but the power goes so often that some project posting sites have started warning project owners against giving projects to Pakistani companies.

Having said that, we now have a decent number of Pakistani doctors, scientists and professional class, given again our relatively modest resources. Inshallah i expect that to have a positive impact in the coming decades.

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

Peshawar in NWFP, Quetta/Zayarat/Gawadar in Balouchistan, Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkar in Sindh ... & northern & eastern Punjab, ... that's the Pakistan left realistically & under the state of Pakistan. Long ago i stop feeling proud of being a Pakistani, even though everything of mine is in Pakistan.. The blame game of international conspiracies should stop.. we have problems the severe one's .. and never in history complete existence of Pakistan was on stake, but this time .. i can only pray :)

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

a) thats a large chunk of our population
b) that situation isnt so different from other impoverished countries that are unable to devote resources to the remoter areas.
c) your can always find reasons to be proud of your national identity and always find reasons not to. i choose to find reasons to be proud, not the other way round.
d) i pray for Pakistan's existence too

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

We do have resources, PEOPLE! Our people are hard-working and enterprising. All we need is a government that lets them work without fear, and with an enabling support structure and infrastructure. Is it too much to ask?

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

Sadly Pakistan has become a joke. It should live within its means and stop borrowing. It needs to just secure its existence first!

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

^^ Jokers takes every thing as Joke... enuf said

Pakistan has all the positives and negatives in it...

Now all depends on the mind-set... if anyone choose to no to be proud of Pakistan, than he shouldn't be calling himself a Pakistani, as in this time of crisis, last thing Pakistan need is these kind of people and mind-set.

Yes Pakistan has problem, yes Pakistan's economy is suffering, yes Pakistan is in state-of-war with groups of extremists, but with all these, yes Pakistan is fighting hard to survive the crisis...

How many countries has fought against super-powers, how many countries in the world have been threatens by Super-Powers, How many countries have neighbours like India... Malaysia and Singapore don't have India as their neighbour....We have!!!

We have our own set of problems, every one have and we with the help of Allah all mighty will rise from this crisis... I am proud to be a Pakistani, in all the forums where i go, with all the delegations i meet, i proudly introduce myself as a Pakistani... and there are thousands like me out there.. they are the hope of the country..

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

Who said we are not proud?

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

We as Pakistanis need to understand that WE are responsible for what's happening in Pakistan. We need leaders who represent us, the people of Pakistan.

Unfortunately, for last 60+ years, same old people have been running the country. Why, because we keep voting for the same people who have looted Pakistan before. Until we change ourselves and bring some one with fresh new ideas, nothing will change in Pakistan.

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

True. We let them exploit us. We elect them. We do not resist when generals take over. We are to blame and we have to correct our own mistakes.

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

Yeah, Malaysia too has a similar story.

Muhammad Mahatir (Malaysian PM) was once asked how he transformed his nation. He replied by saying that whenever he would visit Tokyo or Hong Kong, he would feel ashamed that other Asian nations had become World Centers for either Commerce or Technology, and the development was phenomenal, while Malaysia stood still with corruption and other bad ethics which work to plaque a society.

So he took it upon himself to transform the nation and jolt the very foundation to get rid of corruption, expand the scope of education as well as welfare of the residents. And the result today is a prosperous Malaysia.

I don't think our leaders feel ashamed, if they did, someone would have taken an initiative to not only get to the bottom of the problems, but to actually work to resolve them. The issue is that if any PM was to take on this initiative, he would be looking at an empty or nearly empty Parliament, since 90% (i'm being generous) of the representative sitting there have gotten there through "connections" rather than merit and character.

The entire system needs to be revised, and it is not possible with the current politicians in place because if we were to do a merit scan, more than most of them would not qualify. That's just the sad reality. Pride comes from those who are not afraid to be proud. When we are made to elect from those who have skeletons in their closets, then it would be rather naive to expect some drastically beneficial from them cuz they simply cannot deliver. Their "strings" dont stretch that far, and those controlling the strings would not let them.

Re: Friends of Pakistan-A title not wanted!

I am disappointed that there is no photograph of BB (Shaheed) on the desk. :frowning:

May God Bless the ‘Friends of Pakistan’ for their financial support in these terrible times for Pakistan.
