Friday the 13th....unhealthy?

Came across this study in one of the leading medical journals :hehe:

Is Friday the 13th bad for your health?
Scanlon TJ, Luben RN, Scanlon FL, Singleton N.

**OBJECTIVE–**To examine the relation between health, behaviour, and superstition surrounding Friday 13th in the United Kingdom.
**DESIGN–**Retrospective study of paired data comparing driving and shopping patterns and accidents.
**SUBJECTS–**Drivers, shoppers, and residents.
**SETTING–**South West Thames region.
**MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES–**Numbers of vehicles on motorways; numbers of shoppers in supermarkets; and hospital admissions due to accidents.
**RESULTS–**There were consistently and significantly fewer vehicles on the southern section of the M25 on Friday the 13th compared with Friday the 6th. The numbers of shoppers were not significantly different on the two days. Admissions due to transport accidents were significantly increased on Friday 13th (total 65 v 45; p < 0.05).
**CONCLUSIONS–**Friday 13th is unlucky for some. The risk of hospital admission as a result of a transport accident may be increased by as much as 52%. Staying at home is recommended.

unhealthy bs

^any contra-evidence?

no chick...just my opinion

another more recent study:

Traffic deaths and superstition on Friday the 13th. - Nayha S.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared deaths from traffic accidents on Friday the 13th with those on other Fridays in a national population(..............)CONCLUSIONS: Friday the 13th may be a dangerous day for women, largely because of anxiety from superstition. The risk of traffic deaths on this date could be reduced by one-third, although the absolute gain would remain very small: only one death per 5 million person-days.

:p

did anyone check the number of accidents on Friday the 20th????
or Friday the 27th????

and what sort of stupid studies just compares two fridays and bases its results on it....

did they compare the numbers with other days in the weeks????

armughal: from an scientific point of view, there's nothing wrong with these studies. They want to see how Friday 13th relates to other days. For this purpose they compare Friday 13th to any random other Friday.

As for your question about whether they checked with Fri 20 or 27...it doesn't matter, cuz Friday 6th can be considered equal as/indifferent like any other Friday besides Friday 13th

there r a million other factors that come into play other than the day/date thing (which according to many wont even have any impact anyway) and since all those cant be kept constant, its better to choose more than one day to compare with....

All days are made by Allah. It's shame to even study something based on superstitions and that too which is forbidden.

^i beg to differ. I think this study actually gives insight into whether superstitions have an influence on ppl's behavious on a large scale, or whether they are just superstitions without any further effect

you dont know how many muslims believe in these things

A lion’s head makes you strong, while Arabs often buy hyena heads to become rich

Abdoul Dembele
Magic charm vendor

But one of Bamako’s best known traditional healers, who wished to remain anonymous, says: "Human sacrifice is a myth for intellectuals, but a reality for us in the business.

"Most people who say they are devout Muslims or Christians are our best customers

Well considering there are hundreds of independent variables including superstition, the studies are extremely flawed if they consider only that as the cause or main cause. Rather they are judgmental instead of the basis being in fact. Just because accidents occurred on Friday the 13th is larger, does that mean it is purely superstition? Any scientist of worth would disagree with such an absurd claim.

Well it depends on how much iman is there in the heart. The lower the Iman the higher the ratio of begging of differ against Allah.

^conversely, one can argue the higher the imaan, the more incentive one has to perform such studies to refute the superstitions, cuz they may be harmful to ppl cuz they alter human behaviour.
So i don't think one can exclusively state that performing such studies is a sign of lower imaan.

many muslims also drink…
many other commit adultery…
a big number involve themselves in interest…

they r breaking the rules, it doesnt mean Islam approves of it or allows such things…

very interesting…:smooth:

that is diffrent from believing in magic. drininkig beer does not mean
not believing in allha

Whats really ridiculous is when they dont write 13 on the elevator buttons - but skip it- and write 14.I mean its still the 13th floor with a wrong number on it.People can be so odd:mad:.

^even in sports, there isn't a number 13 car in Formula 1, and in football players don't want to wear the number 13 shirt............(except Alessandro Nesta of Milan)

on the other hand 13 is considered lucky by the chinese
