Fresh every day !

In some homes , I have seen ladies say " I always cook salan every day , my family cant eat kal ka khana " ..

such a waste of resource :snooty:

Do you believe in cooking every single day ? Do you think its justified to hold prejudice against aik do din pelay ka paka khanah? :hmmm:

Re: Fresh every day !

Sometimes I'm not fond of a particular dish that my mom has cooked....or I'm just not in the mood to eat left-overs....so I'll get something to eat from outside or make something instead. But I've no real issue with eating left overs in general. In my home it's not like a tradition or a rule that a different salan be cooked each day. You think of how bad things are ....for example in Pakistan....where people can't even afford the basics like aata to make their bread......it seems silly to make it a rule to cook something new each day. That's gotta be a pain to do. But to each his own.

Re: Fresh every day !

I don't like cooking something new everyday just don't have the time for one thing.........usually what we do is when making something that both me and hubby like i'll make extra so that we can have it again the next day...........trying to figure out something new to make every other day for me is hard enough i can't imagine trying to come up with making something new every day

Re: Fresh every day !

Who doesn’t like fresh salan but you know these days people like me don’t have time to cook fresh every day.:chai: But I try if I can make atleast three handis fresh each week.

If CB you are talking about pasand then definitely I like fresh handi but the thing is hubby and me and children don’t get bothered even if we are using leftovers.

Re: Fresh every day !

i wud say its pure stupid/cruel on the part of those who say they like fresh food every day. they are usually men who say that. i'm sure if they had to cook food, they wud be feeding 15 day old foods to their loved ones...btw, i am a MAN hahaha

Re: Fresh every day !

my hubby wanted fresh every day when we were back in pk there we have kam walee masi who use to take the left over salans.
now when we are here in uk he did the same for quite some time wanting new and i have to throw the previous salans :( but deep in side i was very much tense that i throw the old salan its food some people dont even get any thing to eat so since that day i asked my hubby to go and throww the left over if don wana eat ...so since that day he said lo to mujhay day diya keroo may kha loon gha like he realized that what he was doing .:)
NOw i never throw left overs. Thanks Allah

Re: Fresh every day !

i dun understand this mentality of ppl back home. they HAVE to make fresh food every bloody day!!! they give the leftover to maasi.. but the point is why cant we change this mentality?? my saas dus the same thing and wot happened as a result of it? my devars are very picky.. one of them has to have meat every single day. my saas makes special stuff for him.. like bhuna gosht or chicken or egg omellete or something. we are raising spoiled kids if we make fresh food everyday. dusnt matter whether ure in UK or Pak.. the thing is why not finish the food made yesterday and enjoy somethin new the next day? wots wrong in that? i know men want fresh food and all... but wot the heck... we save their money... cooking is not that hard that women wud run away from it and give purana baasi food...!

Re: Fresh every day !

I love fresh food but can not cook fresh every day... sometimes if i am home than i do cook fresh. My hubby is an angel, he'll eat anything I put on the table(alhamdulillah), For me the roti or bread has to be fresh. I am the spoilt one... I do eat the packed ready made roti if I am really tired otherwise I make fresh roti or bread... home baked bread smells awesome and tastes sooo good with soup!

Trust me as long the roti/bread is fresh even the left overs taste awesome...

Re: Fresh every day !

My hubby won't eat the same the next day, but that doesn't mean to say he won't have it the day after, just not the same thing every day

Re: Fresh every day !

If someone can easily cook everyday there is no better thing than fresh food but at the same time family should not be spoiled to the extent that "they can not" eat a day old food.

I personally have no problem in eating 2-3 days old food bal k my wife aslways asks me "I m throwing this its very old, u wana eat it?" :(

Re: Fresh every day !

I think in Pakistan it MIGHT be easier because you can give the food to your kaam walay and its still being put to good use and not wasted.

Here, if we started cooking fresh everyday we'd be throwing away A LOT of food. We cook every other day.

Re: Fresh every day !

We cook every day, but we also eat the leftovers. For example if i dont want to eat vegetables that are cooked today then ill eat the daal from yesterday. We use all the food, just don't throw it away! (yes we eat a lot :( )

Those of you who don't cook fresh just because of the fact that you would have to throw the left over, why don't you just cook in less quantity? I mean cook the salan that would only last 2 meals and the next day you can make fresh salan.

Re: Fresh every day !

My husband and I were both raised like that.. and of course in Pakistan where the food never goes to waste because you always give it to neighbors, maids, relatives etc! Here we don't have time to cook fresh everyday so we just cook on the weekend and re heat it for teh rest of the week.. BUT if one of us is home or we have a snow day etc we like to prepare a fresh meal and just freeze the rest for later.

I never made roti at home until my mom visited us last year and spoiled us wit teh fresh roti everyday.. now everytime there is a salan (which is not very often since we prefer rice) we make fresh roti at home.. love it!!!

Re: Fresh every day !

oh and my sister re-use left over quite intelligently. For example if qeema is left over, she will make qeema pulaoo next day, if sabzi is left over, she turns that into veggie rice next day and so on ..... oh and we (me and begum) love that leftover turnovers :)

Re: Fresh every day !

My dad always need something new and fresh salan daily. and we do the same as Decent 6 Chora has said. we make the new salan keeping in view the left over so that we can also eat this.
most of time we make enough so that we finish same day.

Re: Fresh every day !

If they have the time, energy and will-power to cook a new salan everyday, there’s nothing wrong with that --as long as they have no leftovers each day and actually finish what they make, so there is no wastage. If they are not the ones cooking themselves, then its not fair to impose on another that they must cook a fresh meal each day, if they are unable to. In my home we are only two, so we almost always have leftovers for the next day. Plus I do the same as mentioned above, not serving the same meal the next day, but using the leftovers to make a new meal

Re: Fresh every day !

Am I the only one here who is fresh "khana khor" Things have changed now but before I had my daughter I had to cook fresh everyday no matter what. Its the opposite in our house. Hubby is fine with eating even four days old food but I have a hard time eating most of the old dishes. Its not just me being snobby but sometimes even a day old food does give me a bad stomach. That can include even some good restaurant food.

Also I have noticed with some trial & error you can actually get a good idea of how much food to cook everyday. I used to cook for only me & hubby & that is every day, sometimes twice a day but besides couple of times in the start I have never had to throw away food. I mean even then we didn't throw away the food but tried to finish it off in the next meal.

I recently "properly" started cooking again. I still am not cooking everyday. But when I do I still only make 2 meals or max 3 meals worth of food.

Also I find that cooking a little extra & then freezing half of it is a nice idea. Like I made Biryani the other day & when the meat got done but the masala still had some bhoonifying to do. I took it out in a ziploc container & after cooling it, froze it.

This way we don't have to eat the same dish the very next day & maybe in 2 weeks I can take it out again & give a fresh dum.

Re: Fresh every day !

Both me and my husband are very picky, we have to eat meat every day. I make freash food about 5 times a week, we have 'freezer food' and takeaway on the other days. Anything left over is frozen and eaten at some other time. I'm quite an economical cook, I hate to throw away food, I always try to find some way of using it. I blend stale bread and put it in the freezer for breadcrumbs, when the tomatoes are too soft for salads/sandwiches I mash, cook and freeze them for use in a curry or lasangna. I dont eat meat on the bone so I cook the bones in water, spices, garlic and onions untill it starts to turn to jelly and then freeze portions of the stock to use in meat dishes. I think if you have a freezer there is no need to throw anything away.

Re: Fresh every day !

Hubby and I are fresh food lover but don't mind leftovers. I love cooking so I cook fresh everyday, actually just an hour before hubby comes home so it's still hot and I don't have to warm up. I mostly cook enough for 1 day and if there's leftover then eat it next day or day after. It's just these days it's a little hard because I have a little baby so sometimes I cook 1 dish that lasts 2 days, works for us.

Fresh food is healthier and I have read that frozen food can make you gain weight fast.

Re: Fresh every day !

why dont you freeze it, or make enough for a day. do you really have to make a daig?
