Is there any truth to this statement? I keep hearing this from various people (from different nationalities) but I find it hard to believe. I’ve been to Paris and had no bad experience with the locals but that was a short stay and was almost 12 years ago. So, anyone recently went to Paris? Was it bad? Would you consider moving to Paris?

I think they are rude only if you speak in ENglish and don’t attempt to communicate in French. If you have a french dictionary and attempt French they appreciate it. My dad went 15 years ago and they were all nice to him
I think desis are self obsessed and stinky. They are hypocrites by nature holding others to harsher standards than themselves.

My friend went to France a few months ago a d said that the people there aren’t friendly. Who knows? I’d have to go there to be able to actually comment on it, but even then it will not apply to every French person. I’d like to visit the country one day, but I am not as interested in the cities (Paris) as I am in seeing the chateaux that dot the countryside far, far away from abaadi.

This ‘stereotype’ is for Parisians (“true” Parisians, not those who migrated into the city from other parts of France), not French in general. I have heard it from several people of different nationalities as well.

Hareem, I’ve heard this stereotype since…high school. I took French class and I think I might have even heard this from one of my French teachers. And if not, then it’s mostly from the non-desis that I have heard this complaint. More recently I heard it from my friend …who is half White and half Arab.
But let’s, for a moment,put aside the race of the folks making this complaint. Let’s assume that there really is a tendency within Paris for the natives to look down on those who do not speak French…does this not then mean that they consider their language to be a standard and that they are judging those who can’t speak it…with contempt? Such scorn entails judgment. And it is a rather harsh standard or expectation. But humans of all races judge; not just the Desis and not only the French.

I really don’t think there is a problem if people try to speak French … It’s more a private ego trip - they want French to be the international standard and not English … and there is nothing wrong in doing your bit as a tourist in France by learning a bit of French. Afterall, we expect tourists to speak English when they come to visit. Parisians also speak fluent English but they will only speak it when in other countries … so I can’t fault them.
