French Open

Andre Agassi gone in the first round - so who here thinks that his prime is over?

he got beaten by a French who ranked 271st - not being hostile against Andre - but he should retire now!

Oh - and Roddick and Justine wins their first games! :k:

Well his prime has been over for sometime but he is still a great player to watch. He should continue for another couple of years at least. More if he wants to follow Martina's footsteps !

She is playing here as well.

Don't look good for Martina - lost 1st set 1-6.

Henin - Hardenne (ladies #1 seed) OUT! Garbin (ITA) beat her 7-5, 6-4.

And how about Santoro - Clement 16-14 5th set and 6hrs. 33 mins!!!

i didn’t surprise me - Justine was still recovering from viral ailment - i did expect her to win U.S open last year but not French open now.

Martina lost to a 19 year old chick - i don’t understand why fans want to see old legends losing to today’s kids.

Awam ki Awaz - Andre was a great player to watch - everyone has its prime - when its time to go - you must go - Andre needs to follow the footsteps of Pete and Micheal - losing to French on a French soil…urgh…:mad2:

..and Roddick lost in the second round as well - boy he just can’t seems to play on clay. :frowning:

So Federer out too and in straight sets.

The 5th (or was it the 4th?)point of the 1st set tie-break Safin - Starace must be the best play of the tourney so far.

I think Goga ( Courtin ) gonna do some trick. He just hang on with Federer and won taht. Maybe

Waise on clay it is really very very unpredictable ....

Dementieva reaches French Open final

Russian tops Suarez, will play either Capriati or MyskinaThe Associated Press

Updated: 9:58 a.m. ET June 03, 2004PARIS - With the French Open field depleted by upsets, No. 9-seeded Elena Dementieva advanced to her first Grand Slam final Thursday by beating Paola Suarez 6-0, 7-5.

Dementieva’s opponent Saturday will be the winner of the second semifinal between Russian compatriot Anastasia Myskina, seeded sixth, and No. 7 Jennifer Capriati, the 2001 champion.

Upsets eliminated Serena and Venus Williams and defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne, and No. 2-ranked Kim Clijsters missed the tournament with an injured wrist. It’s the first time in four years that all four players were absent from a Grand Slam semifinal.

The inexperience of Dementieva and the No. 14-seeded Suarez in such a big match was reflected in the shaky quality of play. There were 17 double-faults, 12 service breaks, 69 unforced errors and just 25 winners.

Dementieva crouched at the baseline several times after losing points, but she started well and was steadier at the end, winning the final three games.

She became the first Russian to reach a women’s Grand Slam final since her coach, Olga Morozova, was the runner-up at Wimbledon in 1974.

A nervous Suarez, playing in her first Grand Slam semifinal at age 27, had 16 errors and just three winners in the opening set.

Trailing 0-5, she double-faulted for the third time and screamed in frustration. Two points later she double-faulted again to lose the set.

The match then settled into a series of cautious rallies reminiscent of the way women played on clay 20 years ago. Suarez began to hit loopy shots in the middle of the court and wait for errors by Dementieva.

The strategy sometimes worked, and with both players tentative and error-prone, there were six consecutive service breaks.

Dementieva overcame two double-faults to hold for a 4-3 lead. She smacked a backhand winner on game point, then screamed, “Yes!”

Suarez briefly rallied and served for the set at 5-4 but failed to hold. Serving again at 5-6, she was pushed to match point and then double-faulted for the eighth time.
