Anyone have any ideas for things can be prepared and frozen ahead of time for quick and easy dinner ideas. So far this is all I can think of:
marinated chicken for baking/grilling
meat sauce for pasta
kababs
Anything else? Am looking for easy ideas that arent too difficult to prepare ahead and wont require too much effort to turn into dinner, to make meal times easier for after giving birth
1-keep stocks for soups
2-you can freeze dough in individual portions to thaw and make what you need
3-can make burritos and freeze
4-have qeema ready for quick qeema/veggies, add to pasta sauce or qeema chawal, or make Sheppard's pie.
You can also prepare lasagana/mannicoti in a large tray or small portions in a freezer and bake it when needed
I always keep the 'masala base' of onions/tomatoes cooked in pressure cooker (without any spices added) in the freezer
Does anyone have a breakfast burrito recipe that can be frozen?
You can freeze almost anything. Whenever I cook anything and there's too much left over, I stick it in the freezer and when I'm too tired to cook or not feeling well, or whatever reason, I just take it out.
Right now I have aaloo mattar salan, kebabs, lamb biriyani, chicken jalfrezi and even gajar ka halwa. Plus naans too.
Just cook as you normally do but make a bit extra to put in the freezer. I've even froze pulao and pasta dishes before and taken it out the night before I want to eat. When you give birth you can take your salan and naans out the freezer so you don't have to do anything other than defrost!
Almost everything I cook is cooked in a large quantity, no idea how to cook for 2 people. I will keep a portion for that days meal and then separate the remainder into smaller portions and freeze. Do not forget to label, esp if your freezer is bagged with food !
My DH and children are not picky about freezer food, so that is a big plus.
Yakhni (Desi or non Desi style)..I also freeze some into ice cubes, pop out of tray when frozen and put into ziplock bags. I usually need a few cups here and there for soups etc, so also freeze 2-3 cups in plastic containers.
Koftay..I make the entire salan, and separate into bags.
Haleem.. same as koftay, and will give fresh tarka when thawed and re-heated.
Burger patties, both chicken and beef. Make patties, wrap in cling wrap, freeze.
Spaghetti sauce. I freeze in ziplock bags, take out as needed.
Lasagna, lasagna roll ups, manicotti. Make, freeze the entire dish, and take out in the morning or night before. Or bake and then freeze into individual/as needed portions.
Chicken tikka..marinate pieces and freeze.
I make large batches of daal, and use what I need for that day, the remainder I freeze. When needed, thaw out and give fresh tarka.
Enchiladas..which is a huge fave in our house. I make the entire filling, and the sauce separately. Freeze into batches and take out as needed, assemble your enchiladas and bake. Or assemble before hand, freeze and bake upon thawing.
Veggies.. I peel, cut/slice all kinds, green/red /yellow bell peppers, green beans, broccoli, spinach, carrots. Put into baggies and take out as needed whether it is for a Desi dish or non Desi dish.
Kebabs, can fry up, use for sandwich/roti filling or make kebab salan.
We go meatless; often use frozen hash brows instead of potatoes. Feel free to add whatever seasonings you prefer , adjust here and there. It is a very versatile recipe and can be scaled accordingly.
When freezing, I slightly warm up a tortilla, fill, and roll up. Wrap tightly in cling wrap and foil, and freeze. Not had a problem with these at all. My children unwrap the foil, and put it in the microwave with the cling wrap on.
I like to make biryani masala ahead of time and freeze it. Then when I want to use it, I just heat it in a saucepan while cooking the rice, then put it on dum as usual.
for how many days do you want to freeze stuff? I am all in favor of short cuts but I do think one should make effort to make some fresh food at least once a week.
There are some other threads in regards to freezing meals although the posts in this thread are very informative and provide lots of starting ideas for you?
I don’t think microwaving plastic in the microwave is a good day. I read that it might be carcinogenic. Best idea is to heat wrapped in toaster oven or microwave in glass plate. Stopped using any plastic in the microwave after I read this.
