Banning offensive speech is a slippery slope? Actually not banning offensive speech is a slippery slope. Are you telling me when they can invent all the laws under the sun…but they cannot make a law to ban offensive speech that targets just one particular group? Are the members of that group any lesser citizens of the U.S? Should the U.S law not afford them protection from prejudice and insults?
If women can lay down naked on a beach, or colour her hair pink but she cannot wear a headscarf as that would cause offence? get real!
Again, you cannot satisfy EVERYONE. People are offensive all THE TIME, its not the role of the govt to protect you from being offended. Should Pakistan ban speech that offends Ahmadis in Pakistan for example?
No they cant “invent” all laws under the sun, and no the cannot make laws to ban offensive speech. The reason is that they would never be able to satisfy everyone.
The members of the said group are equal citizens. They have equal rights. That means they have equal right to free speech. Another words, they are allowed to be offensive if they choose to be. However, it also means that they are not entitled to being protected from any other group being offensive towards them. As long as no one incites others to violence or makes threats, they are protected by law to free speech.
All societies set themselves above all others in one way or another. Pakistan seems to portray itself as Allahs gift to Islam and Muslims everywhere. India feels its the premier champion of human rights in Asia, China is the center of the Universe to Chinese. You name me one country that doesnt set itself above others, atleast in their own minds in one way or another…

You dont protest THIS issue. In THIS case, protest is counter productive and unnecessary. You can protest if you want, as long as its peaceful, but it would be better if you choose to ignore it.

Everyone has a right to protest…irrespective of whether it is counter productive or unnecessary. If you don’t want to protest then that is your right. If others want to protest and to make their feelings known then that is their right. I defend peoples right to protest without people like being judgemenatal about them, and telling them to stay at home. In democracies we encourage protests and debate, so long as it is peaceful. This is what makes our democracies vibrant.
You are also entitled to call black people the N word, and walk around with pictures of Hitler in front of a synagogue. Because you are entitled to it, doesnt mean you should do it.
So the people who made the film have a right to make it, and you have a right to protest it. But whether you should or not protest every provocation is the question here. This movie is only worth ignoring. By not ignoring it, you are making things worse. In this case, it really is akin to barking at dogs.
I also defend their right to protest. But judging them is also our right, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. In this case, most reasonable people would judge that protesting is counter productive and not worth it. All that has come out of such protests is more not less resentment and bigotry towards Islam and Muslim… Muslim countries look more backwards, not less. Islam seems more regressive, not less. The simple point is that with free speech, we can say whatever we like, but discretion in use of that right is up to the individual. You can call black people the N word, but you will get you butt kicked for it.
The reason you cannot silence such insulting speech is because its a slippery slope. You start banning one form of speech and then you are forced to ban other things. Where does it stop?
Slippery slope is allowing people to make hateful videos and burn Qurans, so where do you stop? Now it is in the U.S soon it might be in Canada.
