I have noticed that with a good wireless card, you can get connected in many public places such as airports, coffee shops, downtown areas in many cities. I wonder if there is a registry or some list where you can look up such places in advanace?

I was in a couple of west coast airports last week and surfed to hearts content!

I took my brother's laptop to my sister's college and the internet worked really really slow for some reason. Does anyone know why?

Now that you know, just keep it to yourself. You can find free internet almost anywhere in any metropolitan area or its suburbs. Just take your laptop and drive into any middle class suburb and you will find atleast 15-20 new networks for every 100 meters or so that you drive, and half of them will probably be unsecured i.e. khulla khaata. You can even browse their shared folders if theyre stupid enough.

An even bigger jackpot is apartment buildings and condominums. :D

So far after scouring pretty much all of Mississauga ive come across only one network that was aptly named "***k off and mind your own business!"

Be careful of those free internets....someone might be sniffing all the traffic to get your personal information.

hey im all about protection...and yes pcg, todd is absouletly correct..wrapping a condom over the antenna will give u 95% protection from any unwanted viruses etc..and if u dont have any dont worry...i have some XXXL lying around that i can send over..

Aren't there devices available that help you search for available wireless networks in the area you're in?

I once took my laptop to the mall, but the reception was poor. Therefore, I was unable to surf the Internet. Besides, due to security related issues I'd rather not use a public network or one that may not be trustworthy.

PCG, call up your router's tech department and ask them to take you through the process of enabling the WEP key as well as the MAC setting. Be sure to write it down, as you'll have to enable the two everytime you reset your router.
