Free and fair elections

Do you think Pakistan has free and fair elections Or are votes stuffed into ballot boxes and there is fraud with regard to the election process?

Re: Free and fair elections

votes are stuffed in ballot boxes. People who are not even registered for vote end up voting.

Free and fair elections are a myth in Pakistan. The fairest possible elections were the last ones when PPP rode on a sympathy vote. Even then, more than half of the votes (turn out) was bogus.

Re: Free and fair elections

So do you feel then that any form of elections is essentially worthless?

Re: Free and fair elections

It is just not about free ad fair eelctions. At the last election we have seen video footage of MQM carrying out electoral fraud. On top of that I know of somebody who was supposed to monitor the ballot boxes in NWFP as it was in 2008 but they were told to turn a blind eye to any favouritism to the ANP. Many allegations of electoral fraud by PPP and PML-N too as well as other parties. I have a feeling the US wanted moderate and secular parties ie PPP, ANP, MQM in power . The fraud was committed by all...in a way it was fair and free fraud. Those 3 parties would have still been the government though.

Re: Free and fair elections

Free and Fair fraud? Wow....

Re: Free and fair elections

not entirely worthless. Rigging was at its lowest in the last elections because Army ensured minimal interference from rigging and rogue political agent and it refused to rig polls with Musharraff. This time around I believe that media presence and an increased sense of social responsibility to vote will ensure a greater turn out and consequently more awareness towards bogus votes.

Then again, I must add that result was fair but rigging was still there.

Re: Free and fair elections

The army was castrated because of international and domestic pressure. I am not sure if the army was making sure it was free and fair. Musharaf was in charge and if Nawaz Sharif won Mushy would have gone much sooner. That is why Mushy made deals with BB/Zardari. He was safer under their rule.

The army is not capable of anything free and fair - look at the 2002 elections and Musharafs presidential campaign. Policemen in Rawalpindi tried to get me to vote for Mush even though I had no ID card.

Re: Free and fair elections

And you are forgetting the biggest fraud of the century, the refrendum conducted by general zia-ul-haq, aka amirul mominin.

Re: Free and fair elections

A quick question then gents. Next years elections (ie 2013) will you consider them free and fair if the PPP loses? Because so far you have stated that even though the PPP one it was still free and fair even in its Fraud.

Re: Free and fair elections

Opinions about an election can only be asked after the election has taken place.

A rather obvious point

Re: Free and fair elections

Musharraf had resigned and Kayani was in charge. And for one reason or another Army did not try to rig or influence the outcome.

Re: Free and fair elections

I know but you guys have a habit of bring up the 1970s elections even though it was lost by the PPP. The comment I am making is simple. If you don’t have committed fraud how is that a just election? Or even gives you a right or the authority to rule the country?

We all know that the moment the PPP loses the elections you lot will be screaming fraud and the lack of free and fair elections.

Re: Free and fair elections

Why do you think PPP will lose? I say this because under present circumtance no one could have done better job what present government is doing. So chill and wait when elections come near.

Re: Free and fair elections

The election commission needs to be a completely autonomous body. That is the first requirement for a free and fair election

Re: Free and fair elections

Again wrong. In former West Pakistan and now Pakistan, they won the elections. Discussing further on this issue will off-track your thread. Are you ready for it?

Re: Free and fair elections

Sachaydino in Pakistan the PPP lost. That is fact. Secondly I am saying the PPP will lose because everybody in the media is saying it. Unless you have missed it Imran Khan is supposedly the next big thing.

Re: Free and fair elections

hahaha! :D

This government has no idea how to tackle resources crises, how to plan for future, how to save institutions from collapsing. They had 4 years to show at least some progress. Look But all that happened was corruption, nepotism and confrontation with SC. And of course 18th amendment. Like THAT helped common man eh?

The ONLY positive thing that I gave this government a credit for that they tried to reconcile with everyone.

Re: Free and fair elections

Well a free and fair election commission is not possible when the President or Prime Minister appoints the head of the election commission. If it is to be outside of the Government the person should be appointed like the US Supreme Court Justices. They are there for life and can not be removed.

Re: Free and fair elections

The influence of the military on the media is a lot. You do no need to rig elections to win when you can pressurise the media to say what you want. The media was not in Nawaz's favour thats for sure.

Re: Free and fair elections

At least you have also agreed that this government has done something good and positive. When election time comes then we will see who is the winner. Till such time enjoy the following clip:)
