The Pakistani president today ordered all foreign students in the country’s religious schools - the madrasas - to leave.
The move by General Pervez Musharraf is part of his government’s attempts to crack down on extremism. The Islamic schools have been in the spotlight after reports that one of the London bombers studied at one.
Gen Musharraf also promised to take action against unlicensed madrasas.
Some 1,400 foreign students are now in the country under student visas, news agencies reported this afternoon. The visas become invalid once students leave the schools.
The general told journalists in Islamabad: “They must leave. We will not issue visas to such people.”
Do you think thats abit harsh? Its not the foreign students that are source of the problem, it is what some madressahs are teaching. shouldnt we be closing the warped ones down instead of restricting student visas?

This is a totally needless step done just to show "results." Bush mama called Musharraf yesterday and squeezed Pak to do something fast. That explains the timing and the fact that Musharraf called a press conference for only foreign journalists to announce this decision.
The "problem" madaris are perhaps 10% of the total ones. But these ones are also used by the Pak military and ISI to produce cannon fodder for Kashmir and Afghanistan. So instead of tackling the bad guys, Musharraf has come up another "tactically brilliant" step.

i agree that it is a pretty useless move
but it's better than nothing....why the hell would foreigners travel to some [often] far off 3rd world country? it's certainly not for the paki madrassahs' world-class Islamic education. their home countries will all have plenty of fine Islamic institutions. there is something else going on there....
most were probably looking for Jihadi diplomas anyways

This is a joke. You know why? The fact is that most madaris are not registered and Pak govt has no records of who comes and who goes. With the human smuggling network, anyone can come and go out of Pakistan with any country's passport - real or fake.
Musharraf will make sure that some foreign looking students are arrested and paraded before gora reporters while they are served chai and samosay and declare the matter closed.
Things will settle down. Until the next terrorist attack, say in Australia...

Busharaf has got to be the most incompetent leader to have ruled Pakistan......This idiot has no idea how much capital these foreign students bring into the country, which ultimately contributes to the economy.....but alas if only he held the economic viability of the country paramount over his absolute rule.......First he had the ill-concieved audacity to scape goat the eminent scientists of the country merely on the whims of americans, thereby permanently damaging the prospect any scientist returning to the motherland from the west and now this fiasco....

If its useless, its not really better then anything is it. whats the point of restricting people if its not gonna do much to resolve the problem.
why people want to travel to the third world is beside the point. Its not for us to judge nor restrict their freedom, just because we have shallow thinking.

Why shouldn’t motive be taken into account? what is so attractive about Pakistani madrassahs to foreigners, who all likely have superior Islamic institutions in their home countries? This defies logic.
the probability of foreigners in Pakistan being jihadi-to-be’s is probably pretty high. I remember seeing some Chechen boy in an interview saying something along the lines of “Inshallah I will go study in Pakistan before doing Jihad”

Noop! This was long overdue. I would term this action as “De-Talibanization” of Pakistan. This is a step in the right direction.
What we ought to plan is that all Mad-house-Russahs should be shut down and students transfered to Public schools. Khas-Kum Mulaak Paak (Get rid of dirt to clean up the country). In the same vain, public univesties should kick the Islami Jamati Tullah-bahs.

This is an excellent move, and those that dont see this are either blind or Indian (that says it all)... The fact is that at the moment, its foreginers who study in the madrasas that cause the problems in other countries, and we all know that the west is only concerned with those terrorists that make it to their territory. They will conveniently ignore the terrorsit that run around in Pakistan. So, to apease the foreigners, the best thing we can do is to only allow local terrorists to come out of these madrasa's. Preventing them from producing local ones will be much harder...

Without a total and I mean total crackdown, sooner or later another terror attack will be traced back to Muridke or Mansehra. The international patience wears thinner with each attack. Maybe the ISI loons and their patrons in GHQ need to learn the hard way.
You cannot "manage" jihadis. Either you join them or wipe them out. Standing in the middle will only get you killed.

How is kicking foreign students going to improve or prevent anything? These particular students might go back to their homes or other madressas, what Musharraf needs to do is to make sure that proper Islamic education is taught in Pakistani madressas.
Kicking a few people out is not a step towards the right direction. And for the love of God (no pun intended) madressas aren’t where terrorists come from.
And why won’t people look at the root causes? Too many people need to get a grip.
Research should be done on these religious schools, their students , what is taught, kicking students out of the blue is what an idiot would do. Somebody who has no idea of what is going on, but just wants to look like a bigger fool than he already is.

There is no proper Islamic education in mad-house-russahs. Mullahs beating the crap out of poor 7 year olds is no proper education. This was an ancient system that has failed miserably to train and educate boys and girls without prejudice of race, religion, sex, and ethnic background. That’s why I suggested moving these kiddos to public schools.
No matter how hard you try MQ, these mad-house-russahs are not the place where decent people will send their girls for education. You come visit Toba Take-Singh and I’ll show you the mental hospitals called mad-house-russhas.

I fail to understand why these Biharis are dying to “fix” Pakistan. Baba go take care of your Rubri Devi and Qaudi-Bihar Lallu Parsad. Those Runbir-Sena goons are spreading terrorism against lower Jaatis like Ansaris etc. Go save them and let us worry about Muridke and Toba Take-Singh.

Yeah, obviously they need a crack down, but this move is one specifically geared to end the threat that Madrasahs in Pakistan pose to the Westerner’s. Thus this is a excellent move to meet those ends. As for the rest, you again give away your obvious bias and complete lack of sense regarding the intricasies of Pakistan. Its not easy wiping out these terror producing Madarsaha’s. We cant go in with all guns blazing. There is a certain degree of tact that has to be used, the process is long term. I suggest you try to understand Pakistan outside of you Indian perspective before making ill informed comments.
You insisting on something fast and decisive just exposes your naive approach to the situation. And by the way, as far as the world is concerned, Pakistan is not such a huge basket of terrorism that you make it out to be. Those guys that bombed Londan were British Pakistanis, they are a product of flaws that exist in that community, in that society. And the ones in Egypt, they were proven to be innocent. The only ones pointing fingers at us are you Indians, and honestly, I could care less what the Indians say and neither does the rest of the world.
And by the way, India could do a lot more to help us out instead of sitting across the border and spouting this bakwas…
Ending the Kashmir issue in an amicable would go a long way towards making the region safer… Dont forget, our patience is also wearing thin…

Indian is the biggest poser in the world.. You dont have Mullahs, your have Hindu fanatics... Only in India do you hear of foreign missionaries being burnt alive along with their kids! So thanks, but I think there are better examples then India for us to emulate, like ummm, Canada maybe?
