so we are to eat the meat that has Allah's name pronounced on it. christians and jews in arab did believe in allah, or rehman, so they slaughtered it with that name. so that is why we can eat their meat. now it is just no name on the animals so it it not allowed. and besides even it we ignore that, what of the ayat that forbids meat of the dead animal, while it is common knowledge that slaughterhouses use electrice stun guns, or pressurized air blasts to blow the brains of the animal. i even heard that there was this one scandle or news that one slaughterhouse to save money boiled the animals alive and then cut them, ...what if other slaughterhouses did that too? FDA cant be every where....ever think of that?
and 30 mins is a dire neccesity? comon, dont we have cars? dont we go to desi bazars, or malls that are more than 30 mins drive that we cant drive to eat halal meat ? go once a week and buy entire weeks supply. just one hour round trip is too much?

taking liberties with Allah's communication is no joke.. who gave anyone the authority to add the word (meat) and (while slaughtering the animal)?? it totally distorts the meaning to whatever you want.. I could add (vegetables) and (at time of cutting too) .. can't I??
people just play around with Allah's verses to mislead the public.. read the whole context of these verses and one would realize this is EXACTLY the kind of thing the Qur'an is warning against.. very moving verses.. all talking about upholding Allah's communication over other scholarly verdicts and distortions like these..
There is no mention of meat in Quran but there is difference in the interpretion of the ayat among the students of Imam Abu Hanifa and Imam Shafi regarding inclusion of meat.
Arabic speaking Jews and Christians are different than over here. Yes , they say Allah in Arabic, they may slaughter by reciting Allah's name in Arab countries , may be Arab ulema think that Jews and Christian do the same in USA, this is probably the reason they issued such fatawas.
I forgot the stunning process, there are two things here for big animals , slaughterhouses are supposed to stunned the animals by legislation in certain Canadian states and other reason the insurance cost for slaughter men. Jews do not stunned cows and chickens, for cows they have made a special long knife for protection. Muslims can do the same but in Muslim slaughter houses, they do not stunned the animals. But those Muslims who uses other slaughterhouses, they have to follow the practices of slaughterhouse. For chicken they use hot water with electric current. But KFC is looking to gas the chicken due to pressure from organisations against animal cruelity. I got an e-mail asking me the Halal status of gassed chicken from Zabiha point of view from one of the organization. I said the slaughtering is not consider Zabiha and Halal. There is problem about feed of the animals, only Amish and organic feed without vitamins and vegetarian feed are considered Halal. The normal feed contains rendered animal products including pork, poultry litter in cattle feeds, use of pet foods in ruminant feed. A few Muslim slaughter houses using vegetarian feeds but other slaughtered the animals bought on auction, so they feed with regualr feeds.
USDA is incharge of slaughtering processes and animal health not the FDA. FDA is incharge of feed before slaughtering. USDA is coming up with new proposal which includes meat label indicating what feed the animal was fed and they categorize such as natural feed, organic.
I run a non profit organization Muslim Consumer Group to educate Muslims about Halal food products in super market through Halal food book " A Comprehensive list of Halal food products in US supermarkets" and www.muslimconsumergroup.com since 1991. We do not accept supermarket and Kosher meat as Halal based on recommendation from our Ulema whose names are listed on our web site and also do not accept machine slaughtered as Zabiah and Halal. Our recommendations and criteria for Halal foods and zabiha is acceptable to every Muslims. We do not Halal certify food products if alcohol was used as a solvent in flavors.
Right now Muslims are not sure whether they are buying hand slaghtered chicken or not. Some Muslims stopped eating in Halal restaurant. There was a news in Urdu paper when some Muslims from different masajid went to each zabiha shop on Devon ave. in Chicago asking the source of zabiha meat. Some gave the phone numbers and name the sources, but some got so mad and start a fight, Chicago police came in, things got cool down. This is the sitaution for Zabiha meat all over USA and Canada. But there is good news, the enforcement of Halal laws in different states is shaping up for the benefit of Muslims consumers.
