Their are 3 types of love: Eros, Philos, and Agape.
**Eros **love is based on strong feelings toward one another and it usually occurs in a romantic relationship (husband and wife).
**Philos **love is based on a friendship between two people (friend and friend).
It is true that two lovers that start out by being friends first before becoming partners usually are the relationships that last more, long-term.
**Agape **love is considered the "highest type" of love, i.e it's unconditional love. Agape love is considered the ultimate type of love, as it is completely selfless, and it doesn't even matter if that love is reciprocated or not...... this is the type of love that a mother has (mother and child).
In context to your scenario, it has been scientifically proven that:
=> Most men will choose their wives.
=> Most women will choose their children. Because women are more nurturing and are more likely to be overcome with "agape love" than men.

Tho I am not a Mom or Dad but logically it should be wife should choose husband and vice versa. Coz if the daughter and son are 23, they have a huge life ahead of them as 23 is just kinda starting real life. They will make career, do job, marry and make kids. So they will find their ultimate partner to live with for the rest of their lives.
On the contrary mom and dad has already lived the major part of their lives. At this stage they are not going to focus on career or earning etc. They do not have any aim to achieve. Deciding to live alone (while kids wud be most of the time busy in their lives), no i wont recommend ever. Mom and Dad should live together :)
