Football World Cup 2002 - GROUP D - (Kor, Pol, Por, USA)

Group D
Korea Republic
Poland
Portugal
United States

Date Venue Time Teams
04 Jun Busan 20:30 Korea Republic : Poland
05 Jun Suwon 18:00 USA : Portugal
10 Jun Daegu 15:30 Korea Republic : USA
10 Jun Jeonju 20:30 Portugal : Poland
14 Jun Incheon 20:30 Portugal : Korea Republic
14 Jun Daejeon 20:30 Poland : USA

Personally, I think this group will be led with a 3-0 for Portugal (also 5th in the world). With the likes of Luis Figo and Rui Costa, a powerful attack, could encounter in quite a few goals. Possible all the way to Semi’s?

The scraps are left up to the remaining three with Poland playing well in qualifiers, Korea with home advantage and USA with some promise of sucess.

We can have major suprises here. I have seen Koreans play and they might be the underdogs, but capable of a lot more!
Portugal should be 1st here and get through to second round.

My tips:

  1. Portugal
  2. Korea or Poland, but I'd rather say Korea

Ok, just watched the Highlights of Today's Friendly. France vs South Korea and I must say France can be lucky by winning 3 goals to 2. South Korea was always a threat to France, amazing play, great body charges, pace is just outstanding.
A Site that will produce lots and lots of trouble to their opponents, maybe the best Friendly of this year:

France vs South Korea.

Compared to previous meeting Koreans lost 0:5. A major difference this year though.

Koreans will be tough customer in their backyard....

I guess they will definitely make it to 2nd round.

1.) Portugal
2.) South Korea
3.) USA
4.) Poland

1) Portugal
2) Korea
3) United States
3) Poland

As I predicted amazing performance by the South Koreans, Poland never really had a chance and can count themselves lucky not to concede one or two goals more.
Well played South Korea!

South Korea 2 - 0 Poland.

Poland never found a way to crack their defence or stop them from play.

KOREA REPUBLIC 2 : 0 POLAND

Co-hosts Korea got their FIFA World Cup™ off to the best possible start as they breezed past Poland in Busan, Korea. In front of an incredible sea of scarlet supporters, the Asians finally got their first FIFA World Cup victory on their 15th try.
Goals in each half by Hwang Sun-Hong and Yoo Sang-Chul were the deserving end-product for the Koreans who refused to be awed by their situation or experienced European opposition. Their quickness and energy caused problems for the Poles all night. Korea will try to secure their place in the knock-out phase when they take on the U.S. on 10 June. Poland will try to right their FIFA World Cup ship against the difficult Portuguese. Poland missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring just after kick-off. Emmanuel Olisadebe sent a pass through to Jacek Krzynowek, who was in free on the Korean goal, but his poorly struck shot went wide of the near post (2’). After some early jitters, Korea began to apply pressure on the Poland end, coming back with a good chance minutes later. Seol Ki-Hyeon elevated above the defence to meet a corner kick, but his downward header was stopped well by Poland goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek (10’), and then Yoo Sang-Chul fired a shot from 25 metres that went wide of the right post (20’). The co-hosts did not have to wait long for their enthusiasm in the attack to bear fruit. They got their first goal of the tournament when Lee Eul-Yong sent in a low cross from the left side and Hwang Sun-Hong swept the ball into the net with his first touch from 10 metres, bringing a roar from the crowd that seemed to engulf the entire country (1:0, 26’).

Korea went looking for more, and they thought they had it when Park Ji-Sung received a pass in the area and struck a low shot into the far-side netting, but the goal was disallowed for offside. The crowd let the disapproval be known, and they would have to be content with a one-goal lead at the interval.

Korea started the second half right where they left off. They wasted no time getting their first shot on goal, as Park hit a volley from a corner-kick at the near post, and Dudek could only slap it over the bar for another corner.

It wasn’t long before Korea were celebrating their second goal, which came from Yoo Sang-Chul. He won the ball from the Polish defence and quickly fired a shot from 20 metres that curled away from Dudek, who reached the ball as he dived to his right but failed to keep it out of the net (2:0, 53’).

Again, the crowd roared with delight as they started to catch the scent of their first-ever finals win.

Poland had no shortage of effort, but frustration started to show as players began trying to take several defenders on by themselves rather than play the team game that got them through qualifying. A 20-metre free kick by Michal Zewlakow that sailed over the crossbar was Poland’s first truly dangerous moment of the half.

The Poles began throwing more and more men forward as the final quarter-hour ticked away, and the Koreans, who refused to stop attacking and protect their lead, were dangerous exploiting the holes in the Polish defence. The chances did not produce a third goal, but the Korean fans already had enough reason to celebrate.

Go Korea Go !!!!

Korea was better than poland. But I watched poland’s previous matches, he was not such bad at those matches. Today I could not recognize poland and surprised.

I could not understand one thing about korea, china and japan team. How can their rivals distinguish these footballers. Their types seem same, even their weight and heights are same. All of them are carbon-copy each other. If I were a defend player and was commanded to stop a their definite forvet, I would do nothing in match coz I can not distinguish them by their apperance

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif

Their names resemble each other too.

Good news.. Figo is fit for the game.

all the better to trash USA!

ESPN is hyping USA too much. They are comparing their players to some allstar Brazillian team, and predicting a first place or second. It’s so funny and stupid.

Let’s hope Portugal gives them a 9-0 game

9-0 is too much. But we should expect 2-0 or 3-0.

Hey I think you gave the score of first half I also wait 3 or 4 goal in second half. That day we will watch as if a basketball. BTW amerikans like basketball more than football. This will make them happy

Another dissapointing performance by the Purtogal Team.

Portugal 2 - 3 USA

Their first major dissapointment was against France a friendly match this year when they lost 0-5.
Now this happened.
I knew that the EU. Brazillians as they are called might be a dissapointment and so they provide to be one.

Well!!!! Well!!!! Well!!!! what happened to Portugal?

This world cup is turning up quite a few surprises.

Experts say while US played quite well, more important was the fact that Portugal played very bad.

From CNN:

The United States' 3-2 victory over Portugal ranks alongside Senegal's defeat of France as one of the tournament's shock results thus far. What is all the more amazing is that the U.S. did it without its two best players, Claudio Reyna and Clint Mathis.

Bruce Arena's men played well, but Portugal was abysmal, a shadow of the team admired at Euro 2000. Coach Antonio Oliveira will have to turn it around quickly, while for the U.S., this is a massive confidence boost heading into the next game against co-host South Korea

US kicked some serious butt this a.m

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/hula.gif

I was always surprised why the US didnt do well in Soccer... But maybe things will change now... replying to RD's question in another thread, RD i just came here to the US and I think most of them are ignrorin it, they are more concerned with lewis tyson!!!

I had expected much more from Portugal.
