LAHORE: The prices of daily used commodities increased by about 42 per cent during 2007.
However, there were only few items whose prices almost remained stable. Uncontrolled prices of essential kitchen items have broken backbone of the poor.
A study on changes in prices of several daily-use commodities shows that the food inflation in 12 months-Dec 2006 - Dec 2007-on the average is a cracking 48 per cent.
In Dec 2006 the price of 16 kg ghee tin was Rs 1,180 but during Dec-2007 the rates of ghee shot up by 38.98 per cent to Rs 1,640.
Price of one kg loose ghee in retail was Rs 70 to Rs 75 per kg but during this period the rates of ghee shot up to Rs 105.
One year ago the rates of 10 and 20 kg flour bags were Rs 135 and Rs 250 respectively. By registering an increase of 85.18 per cent, and 94.28 per cent respectively, they are now selling at Rs 175 and Rs 340 respectively.
In Dec 2006 the prices of 100 kg sugar sack, ex-factory, was Rs 2,770 and in the whole sale it was Rs 2,830. The bag prices were decreased by 15.89 per cent, ex-factory and 16.94 per cent in the whole sale and now being sold at Rs 2,390 and Rs 2,420 respectively.
Chicken was selling at Rs 100 per kg one year ago and now available at Rs 120 - going up by a whooping 20 per cent.
One year ago the tomato was available at Rs 30 per kg and these days its average rate is Rs 40 per kg showing an increase of 33.33 per cent. Tomato rate is still soaring up.
Potato is yet another regularly consumed item whose price has jumped from Rs 6 per kg in last December-2006 to Rs 10 per kg now- an increase of 66.66 per cent.
Perhaps the most needed kitchen item, onion has not been spared by the wave of dearness as it is now selling at Rs 30 per kg against Rs 20 one year ago - going up by about 50 per cent.
In the previous year the fine quality rice was available at Rs 40 per kg but in the last month of 2007 the rice was available at Rs 70 per kg in different markets of the city, registering an increase of 75 per cent.
One year ago the price of broken rice (tota) per kg was Rs 22 but during the December-2007 the rates of rice shot up by 59.09 per cent to Rs 35.
Milk (packaged) is yet another item whose price jumped by Rs 7 per litter in last December-2006 to Rs 45 per litter now 18.42 an increase of - per cent.
In previous year 2006 the curd was available at Rs 24 per kg but during the December -2007 the rates of curd increased by 66.66 per cent to Rs 40.
In December-2006 the LPG was available at Rs 42 per kg and these days its average rate is Rs 90 per kg showing an increase of 114.28 per cent. LPG rate is still soaring up.

Silver selling at Rs 278 per tola one year ago is now available at Rs 325 - going up by 16.90 per cent.
