CNG Gas prices take a hike

By Saad Hasan

KARACHI: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) on Tuesday notified revised consumer gas prices and passed on a big chunk of the burden of increased well-head cost of gas to people using compressed natural gas (CNG) as fuel for their cars.

The gas prices, which are notified after the approval of the government, have not been changed for residential consumers. The price of gas sold to CNG stations has been increased by Rs26.49 per million British thermal unit (MMBTU) to Rs291.36 from Rs264.87. This also reflects the intention of the government to restrict the growing popularity of this auto fuel as the increase is more than expected.

The rate for commercial consumers has been increased to Rs283.05 per MMBTU from Rs268.23. Industry, captive power and power plants of WAPDA and KESC will have to pay Rs251.55 per MMBTU instead of previous Rs238.38.

The price of gas used as feedstock by fertiliser makers varies between Rs36.77 and Rs97.11 per MMBTU. However, rates for domestic consumers of both the gas utilities, Sui Southern Gas Company and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, have been capped.

According to the notification, the gas price will remain unchanged at Rs78.38 per MMBTU for the first domestic slab of 50 cubic metres. The second (50-100 cubic metres) slab rate is fixed at Rs82.07.

The third slab (100-200 cubic metres) rate is constant at Rs149.40, fourth slab (200-300 cubic metres) rate is Rs239.01 and fifth slab of about 300 cubic metres is unchanged at Rs310.92 per MMBTU.

The CNG station owners have planned to meet today (Wednesday) to decide on the new CNG price after the increase in the cost of gas. According to CNG Station Owners Association Chairman Malik Khuda Buksh, CNG rates will increase by about Rs1.55 per kg.

The new rates will push up the cost of the fuel to Rs35 per kg in Karachi and the rest of Sindh. Consumers in Punjab and NWFP will have to pay between Rs35.50 and Rs36 per kg of CNG.

Re: Food prices up by 42% in one year

aap kya GS key official najoomi hain?

Re: Food prices up by 42% in one year

people dont know didely squat about these things but that dont prevent them from yakking and which is why statistics from “the post” are also taken at face value.

food inflation in pak has been around 15%:

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/01/02/business/pakecon.php

“…Despite central bank hopes of seeing the inflation rate drop from 7.9 percent in 2006, recent forecasts show that it likely would remain near that level. More critically, food prices rose by about 14 percent in 2007, building on double-digit increases for two previous years…”

moreover rise in food prices is a global phenomena:

http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/business/Fears-over-food-price-inflation.3632281.jp

“…She said world food prices, as measured by the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation, rose by at least one-third in the first nine months of 2007…”

when making these comparison, it also pays to remember what inflation was like in the 90’s when commodity prices were generally subdued. moreover if the macroeconomy was functioning these days like it was in the 90’s it would have been very easy to overthrow musharraf by bringing people out on the streets. ultimately its the economy which has prevented people from risingagainst musharraf and no amount of crying on the internet is going to change that fact.

Re: Food prices up by 42% in one year

Lol, the criteria for removal of a gov is the number of people on the streets protesting? If so how many hundreds of thousands were out and about before BB and NS were on the streets.

Also pray tell in which year in the last 30 has there been a succession of shortages ranging from sugar to flour and fuel?

Re: Food prices up by 42% in one year

You know the price of his suits? Tell me where BB got all of her money to send her children to expensive schools, live in luxury in Dubai and UK, have luxury cars, haqve mutiple homes around the world etc.

Re: Food prices up by 42% in one year

lol we are talking about Altaf Bhai not BB, plus its altaf bhai’s govt that was in power for the last 5 years in sindh… BB was a feudal landlord, but tell me where does altaf bhai get all the money from, since he was a cab driver in his life before politics… :hehe:

Re: Food prices up by 42% in one year

No he got robbed while driving cab but supporting the wardi paid off all his debt. And here’s how he support :hehe:
