When I went to India with my father, I was adamant that I wanted to eat at a theyla or some sort of dhaaba - half the experience is eating at these places. He refused :hinna:
He siad it wasn’t hygienic and that I’d end up sick. I wanted to eat gol guppay - he made me go to a restaurant to eat it
Edit: though we did go to a genuine roadside dhaaba that served hari matar ki chaat and aloo tikkis in those litte leave bowls/katoris
You have to show him ‘No reservations’ with Anthony Bourdain and ‘Bizarre Foods’ with Andrew Zimmern and the kind of food they eat all over the world. He will gladly let you eat off thailaa’s next time
1 rupay ka cholay wala bun. Ironically i have no idea how this hawker looked like. During recess (the school gates would remain closed) you would have a herd of kids getting on their knees next to one of the the school gate and passing 1 rupee notes outside from under the gate (there was a 4-5 inch clearance) and hey presto 10 seconds later the hand would return with a chola bun instead. As delicious as it was unhygenic. This is from classes 3 - 6.
Its basically a bun with choloN ka salan (and a fly or two) inside it.
Other germ infested treats for my tummy during school years: channa chaat, mirchi walay chanay, mirchi aloo, pani puri, kachoree, meethi poori, bhel poori, patties, samosay, kulfi, gola-ganda, makkai, shakar-kandi.

I remember when I was wee little one and we went to Karachi, we went out with the cousins and got bhutta for everyone. Here the youngers were eating the bhuttas while the olders were haggling over prices. The olders got angry at the bhutta waala (he was overcharging) so they said, hum main nahiN chahiyay aap ka bhutta - the kids returned half eaten bhuttas to the theylay waala
Although now that I think about it, I feel guilty kai us bechaarey ka haq halal ki kamaee maari gayee.
