The elders should have had the decency to pay for the half eaten bhuttas atleast ![]()
You sure did roushy apa. Just fish and chips for you!
Kataarays are Tamarind pods .. its how tamarind grows in trees ..if you let them ripe, they acquire a sweeter taste along with their regular sour taste.
Re: Food hawkers in Pakistan
When I used to go to Pakistan when I was little, I sometimes used to go to school with my cousins just randomly. Break time with the papaar, popcorn, chips is something I recall.
I also used to love shakarqandi:jano:
Loved it when my nana abu used to buy me bags of popcorn
I miss that

Re: Food hawkers in Pakistan
All of the above mentioned plus peethi walay laddu, pathooray, laccha, imli+aalu bukharay ka sharbat....
interesting… i never had this thing
My parents never let me have any, but the papar's sprinkled with chaat masala always tempted me :(
Re: Food hawkers in Pakistan
Then there were hawkers who did not have a thela but would sell eatables like:
Phullay ( roasted oats)
Candy which they molded and shaped as a bird, bike , goggle, etc
Chana jore garam ( it is sold in Indian stores in modern packaging now called chana choor) . It so freaking addictive. That gives me idea for a new thread. ![]()
Re: Food hawkers in Pakistan
^ That reminds me. A five minute walk from school (St. Patrick's) across the horse stables, in a very secluded corner, there used to sit on the ground a very old very wrinkly but very kind lil' maasi. Her stall was basically a big thaali about 2 feet in diameter. In that thaali she had everything required for her trade, i.e. selling channa chaat. On that tray she would have an assortment of masaalay, channay, pyaz, dhannia, cutlery, tiny plastic bowls for serving and other sundries. That tray was rested on top of a baalti full of water which she used to clean the serving bowls and cultery. For 1 rupee, which is very damn cheap for that time (1996) you would get a bowl of channay with all sorts of condiments.. the works basically. Me and my friend would always ask her to make it extra spicy.
Oh I remember that now. That stuff was so tasty but half of the fun was watching the hawker molding that soft candy into a bird shape ..
I know cheegs,
to those women who some time take care of their kids same time, when they are selling their stuff.
I could not respect any one more. I think.

Amazing .
That reminds me of the ghubbaray wala too who used to sell animals made of ghubbaray. The other day I saw a Latino outside a store selling superman , spiderman , monkey shaped out of balloons.
