Whats the first dish you made for your spouse? Not a dish you made for them before marriage but a dish you made after marriage. What was their first reaction to it and how have you improved since and how long did it take you to improve? Also, do you always make desi dishes or is it a combo of other dishes as well. I always make desi dishes but this thanksgiving I made my first turkey with American trimmings. I also once made spaghetti but prefers Paki/Indian food. Also, who taught you to cook and when? My cousins mil taught her to cook 2 months before the wedding! I learned months in advance from my Mom and grandma. Believe it or not one my younger cousins cooks so well and shes not married yet. She says she learned from watching her Mom and experimenting. Her signature dish is pot roast and this awesome daal. The first dish I made was simple chicken salaan and daal. He made a face and asked me why it tasted horrible! I was mortified, then I realized what mistakes I made. Gradually I got better and he told me too. He now comes home rushing from work for my food cuz he cannot get enough of it Alhumdulillah se..
mine actually ate the disasters with gusto and said anything from my hands is delicious
- even though I couldn't stomach it myself
and yes I am now much improved
Re: FOOD for the loved one
My hubby is French, so has high expectations when it comes to food. I am not a great cook , but i'm ok at following recipes (i tend to divert away from the original recipe, hence making the final product a disaster :()
Anyway, i know that his favourite dessert is Mille-feuille, so i attempted to make it from scratch, pastry and all........... he came home to find me in the fitchen, covered in flour, sneezing like mad from all the flour dust.....
The end product was pretty good though :)
Re: FOOD for the loved one
I am a very good cook myself and since 90% of cooking is nothing but common sense and I also hate wasting food, I decided to cook myself the first dish after our marriage.

Re: FOOD for the loved one
The best food in the world is Pakistani food.
Hmmm, i don’t agree.
I miss desi food if i go without it for too long (luckily the hubs can recreate my mothers curry dishes better than me
) but i wouldn’t say it’s the best cuisine in the world.
For me it’s Italian:dhimpak:
Abh mujhe daandey lagain gai.
Phooljari, Maroush, Kenjifu lol, lovely stories.
Men get irritable when they don't get fed (like lille kids). But it wouldn’t bother me if my wife couldn't cook. We could learn together and spice up the relationship at the same time.
In the meantime we could satisfy our insatiable appetites by popping into the sandwich shop or by paying a visit to the local quickie mart. Restaurants are way out of my league.
Favourite food English, French and Indian. If my wife suggested a Chinese meal, I would hastily send my dog to the neighbours for refuge until I could negotiate for it's safe return.
I know what you mean..my husband can make the best Paki/Indian dishes leaving me behind..far behind. But of course I mostly cook and nowadays he does not complain at all but gobbles it all up. But I savor the days when he cooks because he is very good!

I will soon. I have to call my mom quick cuz she makes the best chow mein and stir fried beef..Shes famous for it! Okay I have to go before my drool drowns me..![]()
Re: FOOD for the loved one
Goodness I have never cooked anything in my entire life so when me and hubby moved out on our own it was very difficult but I remember making chicken tandoori salon for him and he absolutely loved it!
**Whats the first dish you made for your spouse?
*Butter chicken.
*
Not a dish you made for them before marriage but a dish you made after marriage.
*Before we lived together, I made him packaged stuff, like frozen pasta meals and mac and cheese nad mash potatoes (he luvs em)..he loved it though
*
What was their first reaction to it and how have you improved since and how long did it take you to improve?
*I think he said the butter chicken was too dry but tasted okay.. he ate it all up anyway, but I've improved it since and it never comes out bad.
*
Also, do you always make desi dishes or is it a combo of other dishes as well.
I make a combo of stuff. Sometimes ill make a dish only for him cz i'm not thrilled with it, or he'll make soething for himself.. i love to make chinese though..
Also, who taught you to cook and when?
*I kind of taught myself. I'd call my mom or my MIL and ask them for recipes and follow those the best I could..but as for actually doing it, it was just me alone in the kitchen.
*
He now comes home rushing from work for my food cuz he cannot get enough of it Alhumdulillah se..
**Aww sweet!
Re: FOOD for the loved one
the first thing i made for him after we got married was Sheer korma.. my MIL said that i had to make a dessert as a first thing...
It came out a bit too thin cus everyone was in a hurry to have it (plus it was the first time i cooked something in abu dhabi so had no idea about the gas and other things).. my FIL loved it although he wasnt supposed to have too much of it... my hubby said he liked it too.. but i later found out he doesnt eat dessert/sweet stuff
neways, when we moved in together, my food was pretty crap.. even though i had cooked at mums, it just was not right... 3 years on, my hubby loves my food.. ive learnt a lot from him.. and usually apply tricks my mum tells me or stuff ive learnt from my dad as well who actually taught me the basics
i love cooking... both desi and non-desi.. i think i do mostly non-desi however..
The best food in the world is Pakistani food.
EXACTLY.
Re: FOOD for the loved one

You LUCKY girl!! Please tell me you make him cook classic french fare for you. Your mention of mille-feuille reminds me of a lovely french bakery here in NYC that does a WONDERFUL mille-feuille. So delicious! But I could not imagine ever trying to make it.......... SO MANY thin layers! Are you guys in france?
Re: FOOD for the loved one
I don't remember the first thing I made for hubby after marriage. But I do remember cooking really delicious, rich foods for him that first year. All his favorites. Alas, still couldn't compete with MIL. But it's all good. Now she cooks all the rich food and I cook the healthy food.
Re: FOOD for the loved one
I made chicken salan and zarda. The salan turned out a bit dark since i over bhoonafied the masala and the zarda was ok too. That was my first time cooking on an electric stove and i have also since improved.
