For shami kebabs or any kebabs, i recommend a two or three layered cake stand. Many people in pakistan use them for kebabs with lots of garnishing. The cake stands are very presentable even if you want to use them for sweet like gulab jamuns.

I like to use unconventional items for decorating......for example.....
I've served jello in soap dishes for a kid's party.....made them look like soap cubes.
I've served gajar ka halwa in individual crystal dishes with tea-light candles in the middle.....keeps halwa slightly warm and looks lovely.
I've used bamboo place mats .... rolled them up kind of flat and placed on plate then put spring rolls and appetizer assortment on top. (These are great cuz you can roll or fold them to whatever size and use them over and over again.)

I didnt understand the bamboo place mats bit .. you roll them and then keep them on the plate and then place the rolls and appetizers on top of it? cant picture it in my mind , have you got a picture at all .. it sounds like an interesting idea and I so wanna do it at the next party inshallah

sorry no pics from last time I did it......but yes, you have the idea.
when you roll the place mat make it a flat kind of roll.....not a cylindrical shape.......so you will have a flat surface to put food on.

excellent … something like how we see in Sushi bars , isnt it ? 
… they have a raised bamboo sort of a thing in the middle of the plate and sushi is served on top of that …
anyways sounds like a very different idea and surely will be on my list … thanks again my dear for sharing it with us

yes CB.....exactly like that stuff they use to serve Sushi.....just a less expensive solution....LOL.....the mats are available at the dollar store/pound shop.
and D6.....I've thought about doing that a number of times but nobody in my social circle will ever consume that much fruit!!! Perhaps for a picnic or BBQ it will be good.
