^ I agree. There must be more stringent controls when employers hire people, and there should be more accountability from employers. The government could end the hiring of cheap labor on construction crews, restaurants, farmers, and landscaping companies (four of the BIG offenders) by appointing regulators to ensure that paperwork is in order, fining, and finally pulling the licenses of those businesses who are not in compliance. If there were true risks to businesses, the practice of hiring illegals would slow drastically.
Mexico in particular must be forced to address the problem. The most effective method is to tie foreign aid directly to border enforcement on the Mexican side. If a certain percentage are caught per year by the US border patrol, cut aid by a set percentage. It is very controversial and would never pass, but it would work.
This debate changed the moment the language we use changed. Instead of "illegals" we now have "undocumented workers" or "migrant workers". The fact remains that these people are breaking the law, and the US government is endorsing it. What other criminal activity could you indulge in with the expectation of a full pardon? (unless Bill Clinton was a close personal friend)
