invite 4, 5 of your cousins over as well, for a month :p
Screw the living room space… I would be more worried about sharing bathroom with Srimun & Srimati Chakravorty Jee.
How many loo’s do you have in the ‘flat’?. You must be in Europe somewhere. WHo the hell calls it flats anymore. When I read your title ‘flatmate’, I thought your mate is flat chested or something. ![]()
Cook meat and get yourself a pet, stop being so considerate and sensitive towards others. You pay the rent too, don’t you?
Offer them some beef kebabs, if they complain tell them to take their Bengali arses back to Calcutta.
Why don't you try talking to your friend. Personally, I think that is quite inconsiderate of her to just tell you over MSN that she's coming back with her parents and expects you to share the place with them over the summer. She should have AT LEAST asked you if you were o.k. with it first and understood if you felt uncomfortable.
Is there anything in your lease that mentions visitors/overnight guests, etc.?
That's really odd, you girls should have set up some rules before moving in together. If her parents do come, than its only fair that the rent be split between the 4 of you, why should you have to pay equal rent when she has 2 extra people living there for free.
haha i had similar issues.. my roomie's mom and dad turned up for a fortnight. for a while, i kept my booze well hidden. then one evening, me and uncle had some together and discussed "world affairs". when my roomie got home, he wasnt too happy that i got his dad drunk.
if i were you, i wouldnt stop cooking meat. if they are that picky, they shouldnt really be staying with you. and yeah, get a pet once they leave.
Maybe the parents won't be too bad. I mean, you can go out with them & let them buy the food & drinks!!
You forget, desis are kanjoos. (/me is stereotyping)

u want a wimpy solution, or you want a real solution
1- wimpy solution- just deal with it, you cant do jack about it
2- real fair solution- tell your friend that you need your space and that, you will move out for the summer and get a summer lease, but the pal is then responsible for the whole rent..its fair if you think about it. When one of my pals was graduating from college and his folks went to see him, thats the arrangement he did with his roomie. my pal paid the whole rent and the roomie stayed in a diff place for that time. but they were pals and this was the best solution for all involved.
3- real underhanded solution- another guy I knew ran into a situation where his roomie just out of the blue informed him that he would visitors staying with them for months, after a month or so, he got fed up and told the apartment mgmt that additional people were living there, and his roomie ended up making diff arrangements for his visitors.

Thats a radical notion. Yeah why not try to be friends with them and enjoy your time, instead of sulking in your room?
Play da music louuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuud when they r sleeping, or better yet...burn an entire fish while they r asleep...:D
hmmm…been in this situation…but maamla itna ghambeer nai jitna tum soch rai ho yaar…i thin ktum khamakha dar rai ho…us k parents haen buzurg haen…tumharay ghar mein bhee thori ronaq ho jayay gi…maybe her mom will cook nice stuff too haena ![]()

marwao ge tum to Ashti ![]()
khayr, Humsa, that would be really nice if you if you dont cook meat jst out of respect for them but i think they shouldnt have a real problem with it either…its upto you if you want to extend them that courtesy or not but if you dont i dont think it would be rude ![]()
Great suggestions and comments everyone. I REALLY appreciate them. I've come to a conclusion: As hard as it may be for me to accept this situation, I'm going to deal with it. Not because I'm a wimp yada yada but because this particular friend of mine was once there for me in a very tough situation when no one else was. I can't believe I forgot that when I first started this thread. We've been living together for a year now and one month of discomfort I should be able to manage. Hey who knows, I might really get along with them. Since they've pretty narrow views about Pakistanis, maybe I'll change their minds :)
Don't be surprised though if I whine some more while they're here ;-)
dont get bullied by ur flatmate...
Roommate Dilemme Update
It's been a week since the Chakravortys have been residing in my now-cramped apartment. Mom and daughter have taken over the living room and dad sleeps in my roommates room. Contrary to the popular advice, I have not tasted any of their cuisine yet because uncle is on a strict diet which means they all live on boiled vegetables and rice.
Uncle and Aunty spend most of their day sleeping and don't go out much at all. They have limited fluency in English and Hindi which means I cannot talk to them much even if I want to.
They go to sleep at around 10 pm and wake up at 7 am. This is not a pleasant situation for me.
Somebody is always in the bathroom taking a 2 hour shower. I guess it runs in the family.
sigh
And just now my pain in the a** roomie brought over another Bengali friend of hers which means they will all spend the evening yakking in Bengali and I'll have to keep my door closed even though it's burning hot.
bump
Go outside.
Where? Local arcade to shoot pool with the Arab lafangas? Plus I'm tired...
