Fishing!

Have you ever gone fishing? I remember going during childhood with my cousins. It was fun. I wanna go fishing again, but don’t know any good spots. Or for that matter what it takes to go fishing.

Share your experiences, tips, advice.

Re: Fishing!

i used to fish in my village pond. i hated to hook the worm…my friends did that for me…it was fun. i also remember to scoop the fish during rainy season. sometimes like once a year i used to go fishing in the Ganges rives with my village club party. i just watched how the mallahs [fishermen] helped my folks. they used to through nets about 100 meters from the river bank.

i haven’t been to any fishing expedition :hehe:] ever in Canada although i lived in Newfoundland for quite a few years.

Re: Fishing!

I tried it only two times maybe in my earlier years. Never caught a fish. But now I cant do that. I cant see an animal dying in front of me so I can eat it. (I let others kill an animal for me :D)

Re: Fishing!

where do you live, teggy? usually its not so hard to find places to fish almost anywhere in the US. depending on where you are, you may be able to fish for anything from tiny 5 inch brook trout in streams to huge sailfish and permit in salt water. but invariably there’s a pond or lake near you that has bluegill and other panfish, possibly small and largemouth bass. many cities stock their ponds in months other than summer with trout and bass, they are fun to catch.

you can fish with a simple spin rod and earthworms or hoppers as bait, or if you want a more active, enjoy natural surroundings and technical way to fish - i highly recommend fly fishing. only catch is it gets obsessive real fast. it is very addictively technical, challenging and a thoroughly enjoyable sport.

personally i’ve fished for trout and panfish, used to be in stocked ponds with a regular spin rod, but earlier this year gave fly fishing in rivers with wild trout a try and i’m never going back. i release 90% of what i catch, only take a fish if i really feel like it.

Re: Fishing!

I’m in Chicago. Chicago Park District has listed some parks that are supposed to have a few fish variety. But like the description you wrote, and the videos you posted would be more ideal. I’ll find out more about places like that here.

Thanks for the videos. What do you like about fly fishing that got you hooked? no pun

Re: Fishing!

No pun is no fun

Re: Fishing!

flyfishing appeals to me because one can get uber-nerdy with it, and also combines naturally beautiful and wild places.

lots of scope for hiking along and wading through mountain stream beds. i'll try to post up some personal pictures of places i get to fish once in a while, its pretty good to be out there even if you catch nothing. flyfishing is fairly active compared to the common idea of sitting on the bank waiting for something to take your bait. you cast the fly, let it drift for seconds... no bite? cast to a different spot on the water, and move along.

its all about artificial flies, no live bait. each part of the world gets its own bugs, you have to match them if you want to catch fish. and depending upon the season and water temperature, you have to use a floating fly, a wet fly, a sinking fly etc. there are a lot of knobs and variables to tweak, there is a lot of skill to hone in casting your fly, reading the flow of water and knowing where the spots where fish are, its something you can do for years and still be learning. its not boring ever.

Re: Fishing!

let the fish live :(

Re: Fishing!

Is there a fishing tips for dummies type post or thread? :snooty:

Re: Fishing!

I don't think there is. Even in fishing forums they don't have anything like that. When I started fishing, I used to go to this spot by a lake near here. Every Saturday morning, this old guy would show up to fish. I helped him carry some of his stuff a couple of times and he taught me the basics. Generally, anglers are very friendly and more than happy to share their knowledge and skill. I don't know what happens to them when they get on forums. They only talk about either their catches or about their techniques ( advanced ). There is nothing there for someone just starting to learn.

Re: Fishing!

Fishing is more practical, you can’t really learn it from a book. You could learn what bait works best with what kind of fish, what season is fishing season and stuff like that. But how to reel in a fish, how to tie a hook to the fishing line, how to wrap that wiggly worm to the hook and so and so forth, that’s all practical.

Re: Fishing!

You meanie mean no phishing I mean fishing for me?!!

Just wonder why did my friends in college tell me there are too many fishes in the sea and i’ll be successful in fishinig.. Idiots :hoonh:

Re: Fishing!

I've gone fishing once or twice. I think if you are looking to relax and have a good conversation with your friends then it is fun.

Re: Fishing!

So CENTCOM after you fry the big fish do you go onto smaller fish? Would you class salmon as big or small fish? Are there really plenty more fish in the sea?

Re: Fishing!

Not enough fish in the sea anymore. Over fishing has depleted the fish stores :nahi:

LOL go fishing. Like OYMWA the anglers looooove to teach their skills. Just buy a rod from Wal-Mart. Soon you’ll learn why that is the worst choice you can make :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Fishing!

What is OYMWA?

I think fishing needs a lot of patience. I dont think i've this much temperament. :\

Re: Fishing!

@OneYourMomWarnedAbt

And yes, it does. I don’t do it. Not enough patience in me. Plus when the hook gets stuck in weed and you break it while trying to reel it back  SOOOO annoying.

But the rewards are worth it. Fresh fish. Yum yum yum.

Re: Fishing!

you rang?

That is the first thing one needs to learn. Getting the hook out of the weed, coz it can be very dangerous.

Re: Fishing!

Yes. Especially the ones that are laden with mercury. :chai:

Hate it when I hook the nose of the big guy fishing close by. :bummer:

Re: Fishing!

There was actually someone who didn’t know what OYMWA was :hayaa:

Weeds suck. Period. But if you manage to hook a nice bass through the weeds, and not cheat and go in the middle of the lake with a boat, that’s skills yo :smooth:

Then don’t go fishing in Lake Onandaga :phati:
