Fish and Milk

salaam all!

often I’ve heard desi ppl saying that u shouldn’t consume Milk and Fish together because it can cause some kind of skin disease. I’ve often tried to find out what this relationship actually is and what the disease is called, but so far I haven’t found anything at all about this in my books or journals.
Has anyone fo u heard something abuot this?
Can someone of you provide me some information on that, or whether it’s just a desi-paranoia???
it’s called ‘phoolberi’ in punjbai i think

thnx in advance :k:

Good question. I heard that it is associated with a special type of fish only. I consume fish and ice cream all the time but nothing happened so far. May be it is associated with using fish and pure milk.

some say it is associated with fish who are about to lay eggs, but haven't found anything on that so far either.

Yes, that reminds me.. I am also often told that, when ever I am in Pakistan though.. Never heard someone saying that in Dutchieland..

I also remember someone saying once that it is only caused by eating a certain type of fish, but as we don't know which fish it is.. So its better to avoid drinking milk after eating any kind of fish..

Well, Who would like to have milk after a tasty ' lekker bekkie' (thats fried cod filet in Dutch) anyway :D

^wat about HARING??? :yummy:

Ewwww @ ‘lekker bekkie’

10x Ewwww @ haring!

:disgust:

ehehehe.. why ewww at lekker bekkie..?

I can understand at haring, but why lekker bekkie.. :p
All the brits here, now tell me what is wrong with Fish & Chips..?

fish n chips rocks!! i just dont understand why these americans and canadians dont like it tthat much.

I'v heard about this too, but when i was in paklstan this Aunty once told me that it causes white spots on your face or hands. I think she might have been joking or maybe not.

I have heard about this and wondered how this belief came about. I also wonder whether dahi and other milk derivatives are included (some people say yes, others no)

People in our part of the world cook fish with masala in which dahi is often an important ingredient.

There is one thing that should be borne in mind, though. Both milk and its derivatives as well as fish have a tendency to cause allergies. Some of us show the signs of allergy after having eaten very little, but many of us have allergies that come out only when we have really overstepped the limits. That is because our bodies can cope, to a certain extent, with foods to which we have allergic tendencies. So I wonder whether, for some people, those who are more vulnerable, if a double dose of allergens, due to eating both fish and milk, could cause an allergic reaction?

Nescio, the condition that they are referring to is Vitiligo. Although how they came to the conclusion that it is caused by fish and milk is beyond me, as far as I am aware it is not caused by food related allergies but something to do with the production of melanin in your skin.

^yes, my own opinion wsa first too that it might be vitiligo (an disorder because of which the malanin (=pigment) making cells in ur body die as a result that spot becomes white), but lately i'm thinking about perhaps a fungal infection????

(will be back soon with more)

hehe.. Shinoo, which one of the two are you now..?? :hehe:

^

Heyyy I love fish n chips!
Jst don't like haring and lekker bekkie :p

first of all Shinoo and Gizzy: HARING is just delicious!

second: for the non-dutch who don’t know what haring is: it’s a dutch speciality. It’s a rather small fish which isn’t cooked or roasted or whatever. No, it is eaten raw togehter with raw onions and a piece of bread (as a sandwich)

third: about the original topic. Is the white rash “caused” by Fish and Milk the same as Vitiligo?

Shirin: you’re right, that often dahi is used as a base for the fish meal, my mom uses it too, and could never explain why that does NOT affect your body! And your theory of allergy is interesting, I was thinking in the same lines too, that perhaps an allergy to a product of fish AND milk causes allergy to that. And it is known that through a process called “cross-reactivation” our body can see certain things in our body as allergens,(the body ‘sees’ own tissue as the allergen coming form outside), and thus cause vitiligo as shahreen mentioned (because that is a kind of allergy to your own body)! But it remains to be seen whether it’s true…my hypothesis about an fungal infection: often they cause white spots too, difficult to treat and furthermore, because I couldn’t find direct evidence for vitiligo i postulated this hypothesis

but anyway, thnx all for ur help! more suggestions are welcome :k:

So Nescio any conclusions? I'm intrigued about this whole thing now.

I wrote it off as “OldWives TALES”

There are many such folklores of west arising in Eyrope more than in USA which is still young

But i agree it is a very widespread hearsay through out the indioan subcontinent for sure & may be elsewhere (mid east s.e. Asia ( alsobut i havent checked

Vitiologo is mainly genetic & in early case is confused with Leprosy which layman use interchangeable But leprosy is INFECTION & vitiligo is just melanin deficit & perhaps only cosmetic defect .

well, no definite conclusions as of now, only my hypothesis that perhaps it's a cross-reactivation because of which this disease is triggered.

I have tried to find the English translation of the punjabi/urdu word: 'phoolberi'. or something like that. but haven't found it yet

well like they say "zaban-e-khalk nakkara-e-khuda"

so if so many people say it can happen then maybe it can happen!

^naaah! that is a VERY dangerous argument! for example: end 19th century ppl didn't know how (infectious) diseases were transfered from one individual to another and they (all) thought that perhaps some mysterious power or something else was behind it........now it's known that it's caused by micro-organisms.......so although everyone thought it was some strange power, doen't mean it WAS so.

another example: in the begining all ppl believed that smoking wasn't bad, doesn't mean that it is true....
