First Test @Karachi..... Pakistan Vs Srilanka

Samaraweera's SR (83.87) 130* off 155 balls says it all. That SR is good enough in one-dayers.

Re: First Test @Karachi..... Pakistan Vs Srilanka

**Finally the day has end ...

****Sri Lanka 406/3

I guess they will b lookin for 600-700 runs to have a chance of follow on
**

Don't really follow or watch test matches played in Pakistan.

What was the captain sahibs tactics like ?

Was he aggressive?

What do you think are the reasons or excuses for such a good strike rate?

The new captain sahib wants to emulate Imran](http://thenews.jang.com.pk/daily_detail.asp?id=163812)**. **

With current squad made available to him where there is competition for place in the side combined with back up young talent waiting produced by the Pakistan production line who will bet against him.

There was a reason for that

(cricinfo)
http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/pakvsl/content/current/story/391652.html
“Despite the run-fest, Younis Khan set attacking fields through the day, conceding plenty of runs in the vacant third-man region. The two slips for Danish Kaneria seemed a luxury at times but you could sense he wanted to be aggressive on the first day of his captaincy. He perhaps took the conventional means of attack to an extreme and the ploy failed to work.”

That is highly wishful with the players available to Younis. Even with Asif and Yousuf back this Pak team cannot hold a candle to the dependable and talented sides of the eighties

Imran Khan captained a side in the eighties boasting the likes of Javed Miandad (as dependable as they come, he could nudge the ball into gaps all day long), Zaheer Abbas (as stylish as they come, his timing and placement were exquisite), Majid Khan (majestic but an underachiever IMO), Wasim Raja, Wasim Bari (best w/k we ever had), Mohsin Khan, Mudassar Nazar, Sarfraz Nawaz, Iqbal Qasim and Abdul Qadir. They were all committed players and not nakhray baaz or pampered like the present lot. In the latter part of his career Imran had gifted players like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Salim Malik, Salim Yousuf (gutsy w/k) and Saeed Anwar. And finally in the twilight of his career Moin Khan, Mushtaq Ahmed and Inzi made their international debuts. Rameez Raja and Ijaz Ahmed were n’t bad players either. Tauseef Ahmed also had his moments

This team is sadly no way near those teams.

I'll give 'em benefit of the doubt since they haven't played a single test in 14 months. It'll take time for them to get into rhythm.

Re: First Test @Karachi..... Pakistan Vs Srilanka

**tht shudnt b an excuse actually ....
they are professional cricketers ......
the fact is ....

our bowling is quite ordinary ......

Re: First Test @Karachi… Pakistan Vs Srilanka

Isn’t Karachi pitch an ocean of runs anyway? :chai:

If our team doesn’t score more than 350+ in first inning then we’ll be in trouble, my 1.5c.

**
baki .5 cents kia younis khan ko dey diye :hmmm:
**

So where are you watching this match then? Online or who exactly is showin it?

Help will be appreciated. Thanks

I am saving .5 cents from sharing everytime for “someone” who may ask his share anytime you know like our president, or someone from London, or someone from FATA :D, sorry for the political/ “religious” tangent

Karachi pitch has been known for its runs but Jayawardene was dropped by Misbah on 41 and again twice later. So that contributed to the misery of Pakistan. Also, I believe in a test match the 5th bowlere is a crucial factor. Pakistan should have probably gone in with 4 genuine bowlers + an all rounder and that could have been Yasir Arafat. Shoaib Malik could have been dropped and Yasir Arafat could have taken his place. And Mohammad Talha could been in the squad. A long hot day of 90 overs, you need 5 genuine bowlers. Shoaib Malik's dollys dont really cause a threat in test cricket.

Going with just one experienced fast bowler (Gul) and one "experienced" spinner (Kaneria) was a big mistake. It might cost Pakistan this match. Also Malik+ Misbah have dropped a lot of catches recently, a little chitrol might help.

Having watched portions of the game last night, I have to say that the score of 406/3 at stumps does not tell the full story.

I think Pakistan provided Sri Lanka with a "safe passage". Jayawardane was far from comfortable when he started batting. He grew in confidence once he started getting boundaries through the innumerable gaps in the field (thanks to YK's attacking field). Even so, he was lucky to have been let off by Gul, Misbah and Malik (The latter two were easy chances). Sangakarra was lucky to have been spared an LBW decision by the umpire in the middle of his innings.

If only the Pak captain and fielders had done a few things right, the SL score at stumps may have read 280/6 (which would have been an achievement for Pak given the harmless nature of the pitch).

Sohail Khan, despite going for runs, would be a good bowler on helpful pitches I think. He has the pace and zip. And more importantly, he did not appear as though he was obviously chucking like in some videos I had seen of him on YouTube.

With his 25th test ton (and the first against Pakistan), Mahela Jayawardene became the tenth batsman to have scored centuries against all the Test-playing nations.

Any guesses as to who the other 9 are?

Re: First Test @Karachi..... Pakistan Vs Srilanka

^Jayawardane has an average of 52+ after more than 100 Test Matches which is fabulous.

But there is no denying that he is in gradual descent mode (from his peak)....there is an unmistakable air of difidence and hesitation in his batting these days. Even his century yesterday came only after he was let go 3 times.

True but Jaya has always been a steady player IMO rather than outrightly brilliant batsman like say Lara, Tendu, Miandad, Ponting or Richards

Another much under-rated batsman is Shivnarine Chanderpaul who has 8,000+ test runs and is averaging almost 50

Cricinfo - Records - Test matches - Most runs in career

Cricinfo - Jayawardene pleased with 25th century

Jaya is much better than anything Pakistan has presently got.

This is going off topic.

I know reading from your posts that Javed is one of your all time favourite players. There is no doubt he was a genuine World class batsman and played according to the needs of the situation. There is no debate about this.

However, you always bring his name up in such discussions; don’t you think the World has produced other batsmen who were better than him and certainly had more flair and more exciting to watch?
