First Pakistani in Wimbledon

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

Aisam has done us a lot of proud thus far. Good luck to him! Wimbledon is the ultimate competition in tennis and him competing in fills me with sense of pride and joy! Hope he progresses as far as possible!

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

Was fatwa issued against him by pairing up with the Jew?

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

whens the match with Siffin ?

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

^ James bhai he plays tomorrow (Thursday) at 12 p.m. (GMT) 1st on court 18. He was given a spot on the show courts today but because of rain the order of play has been revised.

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

Good going, hopefully he'll do well in the next round too.

**I can hardly afford a meal here, says Safin  **

MOSCOW: Marat Safin has won more than $13 million in prize money in his tennis career but said he could hardly afford a meal at this year’s Wimbledon. “I try not to overstay my welcome here,” the former world number one told the Sovietsky Sport newspaper, calling Wimbledon his least favourite tournament. “Players complain about a lot of things in the locker room but when it comes to speaking their mind to the press they always say how nice everything is. But how can it be nice if you can’t even buy a normal meal with our daily allowances here. A plate of spaghetti cost $25, where else do you see such outrageous prices,” he asked. The outspoken Muscovite also lashed out at what he saw as overzealous security, saying: “The only thing they do is search your bags and all your pockets about 300 times a day.” reuters

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

^ If It was Gupshup would have covered it.

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

personally I dont have an issue with him pairing up with a Jew
Take the game in the spirit of the game

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

there were threats for a ban and fines and what nots to a pint that international tennis folks had to warn Pakistani tennis folks to back off.

just serach under aisam and wimbledon and you will find threads from 2002.

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

Aisam couldn't match Safin's firepower and lost first 2 sets easily. He put a good fight in 1st set but 2nd one was disappointing.

Great fight back in 3rd set and it's currently 6-6 and it's tie breaks but Aisam's game was awesome in last set.

Nothing to feel shame about, you have done us all proud.......:)

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

Aisam loses 4-6 2-6 and 6-7

Great fight in last set but couldn't take advantage of break points and set points. He has still done a GREAT job and we should be proud of him :)

It's not end, he will probably qualify for US open as well and i hope he will play Australian open next year, i will be there to cheer him up :)

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

He played really well in the third set. Didnt start the match all that well but Safin we all know is in a different class. Age is not on his side but I hope Aisam plays as many grandslams as he can and we will cheer him up all the way.

Great performance and I am really proud of him.

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

Great effort indeed. :k:

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

He sure made history... Good luck for him in future games.

Pride of Pakistan

WIMBLEDON, England – Tucked away in a corner of the All England Club grounds is Court 18, a cozy show court that often serves as a stage for rising stars. Playing there Thursday, against Marat Safin, was Aisam-Ul-Hag Qureshi, a 279th-ranked qualifier from Pakistan who lost but proved with his excellent serve-and-volley that he belonged.

He was the first Pakistani at Wimbledon in 32 years, and the crowd included dozens of Pakistanis, who shouted ``Shabash!‘’(Well done, keep going!) throughout the 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) match.

Up until this week, he was best known as the guy who won a humanitarian award for playing doubles with Israeli Amir Hadad in 2002. He was criticized by Islamic extremists back home.

‘‘I never thought it was going to be such a big deal,’’ he said. ``I will stand with the point that you shouldn’t mix politics, religion or color into sports. If I take a stand against a Jewish player, next thing I know, all the Christians and Jews and Indians take a stand against me and then I can’t play. If I feel I can do well with an Indian or a Jew again, I would definitely play with them.‘’

Qureshi, 27, began keeping a diary in January, and in it, he wrote every day: ‘‘I want to qualify for Wimbledon.’’ He had read a book by Billie Jean King in which it said that Martina Navratilova wrote ‘‘I will win Wimbledon’’ every day in the year preceding her first victory here.

‘‘I’m very happy that I’ve been able to do that, and win a round, and my next goal is to get in the top 100 this year,’’ he said. ``I believe I can do this.‘’

Qureshi’s mother, Nosheen Ihtishan, was a national champion tennis player in Pakistan for 10 years, and his maternal grandfather was the Indian No. 1 before the two countries divided.

Qureshi, who didn’t pick up a racket until he was 14, says he has surprised himself with his success: ``Tennis has given me a way to make my parents proud of me, and that’s a really big thing for me.‘’

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

Maria Sharapova lost to venus williams in straight sets :(

Super Fed and Justin henin gonna win again!

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

Rain delays really ruined Wimbledon.

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

Justin Henin was shocked by Bartoli (funny but cute name). Grand upset indeed.

Federer is through to semis where he will face Roddick if Roddick goes through his QF. Nadal is also through to semis and will play djokovic. Did anyone watch match between Baghdatis and Djokovic??? 5 hour thriller with see-saw battle all the way. What a treat it was!!

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

Fixed.

Re: First Pakistani in Wimbledon

Richard Gasquet, who Aisam ul haq beat prior to the tournament, defeated Andy Roddick today.

So.... Aisam > Gasguet > Roddick :D
