Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

mashallah ... thats awesome... i hope he does well against Safin as well ... it will be tough match though!

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

He was very impressive. Excellent serve, and a good base line game. He is fast on his feet too, suited to grass court tennis. We can hope for a 3rd round insha-allah.

Did you guys hear someone shout “go on Inzamam”-to which the commentator added “I didnt know the Pakistani cricket capt is out there”. :hehe:

Very happy, delighted even with Aisam’s returns.

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

Nice one and good luck to him in the next round.

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

I hope he does not get spoilt with sponsors like our little Sania Mirza !

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

Good Job Aisam.

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

I don't think he will go Sania's way, he has been doing well for Pakistan for many years now but now he i at his peak (at the age of 27). Sania still has lot of time to make an impression.

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

MashAllah, He's doing real well. Next challenge is Marat Safin and all the best for Aisam. At least, some Pakistani in the Tennis arena which is so great to have.

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

excellent win for Aisam, on such a stage is wonderful. so he plays safin next as some1 here mentioned? the match will perhaps be his toughest ever, He will do well Inshallah!

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

Safin is former world number 1. This will be Aisam's toughest challange ever. Inshallah wish him all the best !

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

Aisam you are a star. Lets hope he can go on for a bit although beating Safin, a former World no. 1 might be asking too much of him. He emulated Haroon Rahim’s two victories at Wimbledon in the 1970s

Qureshi realises lifetime dream
http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2007\06\27\story_27-6-2007_pg2_8
LONDON: Aisamul Haq Qureshi admitted he had fulfilled his life’s ambition after the Pakistani won his first singles match at Wimbledon on Tuesday. The 27-year-old fell in love with Wimbledon after spending his childhood in Lahore watching the likes of Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker battle it out on the famous lawns. He had strived to reach the main draw at the All-England Club for 10 years and, after missing out in the final qualifying round several times he finally made it this year, becoming the first Pakistani to play in the Wimbledon men’s singles since Haroon Rahim in 1976. So when the Pakistan number one hit a volleyed winner to clinch his first Grand Slam singles victory over Britain’s Lee Childs that set up a second round clash with Marat Safin, it was the culmination of his childhood dream. “It feels unbelievable because it has always been my dream to play in the main draw at Wimbledon,” Qureshi told AFP. “Even match point in the last round of qualifying was a big deal because three times I’ve lost in last round qualifiers to get into Wimbledon, so I was unbelievably happy then, let alone now. In Pakistan when I was younger they only used to show the Wimbledon finals, so I was always watching Edberg and Becker. I grew up watching those guys and that’s why I like to serve and volley.” Qureshi’s win was only the second by a Pakistani in the men’s singles and it was no surprise that his celebrations were the most extravagant at Wimbledon this year. He fell to his knees and kissed the court before rushing to celebrate with his vociferous supporters, including his parents, brother and two cousins, at courtside. “I wanted to share the moment with my family,” he said. “I just got 20 missed calls and 20 text messages. It’s going to be mad back home. The day I qualified people were really happy for me and this is even bigger.” Qureshi, ranked 279th, honed his serve and volley game on grass courts in Lahore as a youngster and is reaping the rewards. He beat talented Frenchman Richard Gasquet in Halle earlier this month and believes he can give Safin, a former world number one, a taxing test in the next round. “I’ve never played Marat,” he said. “Obviously he is a world class player, but grass is definitely my favourite surface and it’s not Marat’s. The first four years of my career I didn’t play on anything else, so I’ll just try to give him a tough time. I’ll give my best and the rest is up to God.” The Lahore-based player believes this victory can be a springboard to end the year as a top 100 ranked player. He said: “Since I started playing juniors everyone has said I am capable of winning matches like this. It’s been a rollercoaster ride, but I got to 80 in doubles, so I always believed if I could do it in doubles I could do it in singles. This year the door has been opened. I’m feeling mentally very relaxed and positive. I’m working hard and after 10 years the tennis courts are finally listening to me. At the start of the year I was 600 and my goal was to qualify for Wimbledon. Now my goal is to be in the top 100 in singles and doubles. I really believe I can do that.” afp

Re: Go Aisam ul Haq!

I watched the first 2 sets of his match and he has a very good all round game. He has been given Court 1 later today and what a honour It'll be to play on a biggie. I think Safin will do him but I hope he makes him work for his victory.

Childs’ play for Aisam at Wimbledon: Second Pakistani to reach second round

** LONDON, June 26: Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi enjoyed a day to remember as he became only the second Pakistani to win a men’s singles match at Wimbledon by defeating Lee Childs in the first round on Tuesday.

Aisam, 27, emulated Haroon Rahim’s two first-round victories in the 1975 and 1976 with a convincing 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) success over Childs, a British qualifier, and will now play former world No 1 Marat Safin, the 26th seed.

It was an historic afternoon for Aisam. He became the first Pakistani man to play in the singles since Haroon’s appearance 31 years ago and was also appearing in his first Grand Slam singles event.

Haroon’s 1976 first round victory was the last time a Pakistani had won at Wimbledon and Aisam’s debut Grand Slam triumph ensures the All-England Club will always have a special place in his heart.

It was a far cry from Aisam’s previous visit to Wimbledon in 2002 when he found himself at the centre of a storm over his decision to play doubles with Israel’s Amir Hadad.

The move enraged the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) since his country does not recognise the Jewish state. The PTF threatened to throw Aisam out of the Davis Cup team but he defiantly played on and the pair were later given the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year award for their solidarity.

The Lahore-based player, whose mother Nausheen is a former national champion, could concentrate solely on his tennis this time.

Although he plays mainly in ATP Future events, which are two levels below the tournaments featuring the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, Aisam showed no signs of being overawed on the big occasion.

Aisam drew first blood here with a perfectly-placed backhand down the line to break Childs in the sixth game of the first set. The Pakistani served and volleyed with considerable aplomb to ensure he closed out the set in confident fashion.

Aisam refused to let Childs settle and broke the qualifier again with a powerful forehand return at the start of the second set.

A pair of thudding serves from Aisam stopped Childs, ranked 404th, taking two break points and he held his lead to move two sets in front.

The third set went to a tie-break. Aisam moved to match point after a Childs error at 5-5, only for the Briton to save it with an ace.

Childs netted again to give Aisam a second match point, this time on his serve, and he took with a volley. He dropped to his knees before running to the courtside to celebrate a famous victory with his family.

Aisam, mobbed afterwards by Asian fans clamouring for photos and autographs, said: “From the first point I decided to be aggressive. The main thing I was worried about was how to handle the pressure at Wimbledon.”

He may be ranked only 279 in the world but Aisam’s confidence was high when he upset Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the Halle grasscourt tournament earlier this month and then fought through Wimbledon’s qualifying rounds.

“I was very loose and relaxed on court today,” he said. “I don’t think Lee expected me to come out today so pumped up and fired up.”

Aisam further said: “I am living my dream. Ever since I started playing, I wanted to play Wimbledon.”

“My mum took me to the tennis courts one day when I was 14.

That is when I started playing tennis.”

From Jan 1 this year he has been writing every day in his diary: “I am going to qualify for Wimbledon.”

Aisam had failed three times before in his bid to get into the main draw but “I always believed I could play with the big boys. Qualifying for Wimbledon has changed my life.”
