alot of people in my family get married within the family!! n so i'm i...wats soo unsafe about them? and please no offence buh let's not bring up the whole disable children thing again..

This has been discussed here many times, you should do a search for cousin to review everything thats been said and all the articles that were referenced in regard to this topic.

In short, if you have concerns regarding birth defects due to inter-marriage then visit a genetic counsellor with your partner. You will be given a detailed report of risk after a detailed family history is given. The more inter-marriage that has taken place, the greater the chance of trouble. That said, there is risk of trouble in any conception - related or not.

Yes I will be marrying my first cousin so was just a bit concerned after seeing something on the internet.

My cousins parents and my parents are not related at all so I think we might be ok.

I have see many of my cousins marry each other and all their kids seem fine.

there is nothing wrong with marrying your cousin. chances of getting birth defects are 2-3% for non-related couples, and 4-6% for first cousins ... not that big of a diff.

historically, cousin marriages were popular between wealthy families (especially in west), to keep the wealth within the family. 80% of all these gora ppls' ancestors had cousin marriages so i don't know what they find so gross abt it!

I think he means that both his parents are not cousins and the girls parents arent cousins either. You should be just fine, it only becomes a problem I think when there's too much cousin marriages going on like your grandparents, your parents, her parents, and then you guys..

There's a higher risk or birth defects than with more distantly related spouses, but it's still a very very small risk. It's just that with non-related spouses it's a very very very small risk.

r3aziz, a lot of my rellies are married to their rellies lol , and all of their kids are healthy, i also know of poeple that have married cousins, and their kids also are healthy . hope this helps :slight_smile:
