Beside pots/pans stuff, I think Microwave and Toaster Ovan are the most important. Since you are setteling in and don't have time to cook yet, you can always warm up quick foods or cook small things (sandwiches etc ). Unless you have decided to eat out for a week :)
You don't need some moving company to get these things for you; they'll cost an arm and a leg! You're self-sufficient man, I'm sure you can do this yourself. Aside from the general kitchen appliances, I found this list of things online.
*The Bare Necessities

Don't feel overwhelmed! Get whatever you can, and about a year into you'll probably be looking for stuff to throw away.
and in NY remember most apartments arent that big and are pretty expensive, so if ur on a smaller budget and will be living in a smaller place, then dont over-buy things, buy the basics (refer to the list above^^) and then see what else you may need later on
starting from scratch sounds fun, especially in NY
I would say first to check the area ACHI TARAH. How much known is it for crime scenes? I'm not saying Brooklyn is bad, but aapki salamti zyada azeez hai.
Esp your neighbors. Dont try to dare yourself living among African americans. Result will be either you'll be doing "YO YO" after a week with two fingers up or smelling some booties.
Also try to avoid old people nieghborhood. They are lovable but only when they dont create chaos upon any extra sound that comes from your apartment.
Lets come inside. Check the heating first. There shouldnt be any tiny whiny holes around the windows and heating should be perfectly fine particulary in the nights.
Not sure why dont you want dish washer. Eventually you gonna need it but you may not ask for it once you sign the contract and move in. Same for washing machine.
Also your landlord should be giving you new appliances for refrigerator. Check carpet condition.
Take the snaps of your rooms from every corner before moving in so that your landlord may not dispute the damages whenever you'll be leaving in a year or two.
Rest the link provided by somegroovychick and list by somehowcollide are very useful. Try to follow it.
Good Luck and Let me know if you need any help. I'll be a distance of 40 min from you.
safety
how the apartment looks (sunny, airy, spacey etc)
convenience (subway access/stores/delis)
cost
nice landlords
for household basics get thee to ikea. you can get everything under one roof for a reasonable price.
u can probably get crime stats on a particular neighborhood by searching online ...u can also get a feel of whether there is a community involvement by residents in neighborhoods by talking to real estate agents / police or see if there is are schools, parks, churches, hospitals etc in the vicinity.
Pir Fraudia will come and tell you Lota is the most important thing.
Lota actually stainless "chamakta howa" lota .. jamaal-yati hussan ki ik umda misaal hai .. Imagine "chamkata howa lota" in washroom impression on hot chicks :@:
This thread is very useful to someone like myself as well...Im starting from scratch and will need a lot of things to begin a life and I hate forgetting essential things.
Ok Firenze I live in NY in Brooklyn and I have to tell you that if you are serious about finding an apartment, then all you have to really do is look through the various newspapers in their rentals section.... there are PLENTY of furnished apartments for rent... pick up the Bay News from the deli and corner stores and youll find pages upon pages of brooklyn apartments and houses for rent... both furnished and unfurnished.
If you're looking to be around desis, Brighton and Foster area is probably your best bet... Bay Ridge is also nice... great apartments... nice people.. loads of stores... halal meat and restaurants closeby... close to transportation. If you're into something a lil more gorafied... I say Mill Basin, Marine Park, Sheepshead Bay... very nice, clean, suburban type areas. Bensonhurts is also awesome.Neighborhoods to avoid at all costs unless you're a bigtime gangsta are obviously Dyker Heights, Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, Crown heights, Flatlands, Coney Island flatbush etc etc. Roach and rat infested areas filled with hoodlums.
Btw how much is the average rent there ? and If someone wants to move there for couple of months than is it possible to find an apartment with no lease ? or may be sharing
