KARACHI: Pakistan is the major mover in the final FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking of 2002, climbing three ladders to get all-time the best 178th rank in the world and 37th spot in Asia.
According to the latest FIFA Ranking, issued from Zurich, Switzerland, Pakistan, which had slumped the lowest 191st position earlier last year, finished with an encouraging slot in the end of year 2002.
“It’s really a moment of delight for us that our country jumped three ladders at the end of this year to record the most improving position so far in world and in Asia as well,” informed Agha Liaquat Ali, Secretary General, Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) from Quetta on Thursday.
He said that their efforts to raise the standard of soccer and keep it out of doldrums had started meeting with success.
“This has happened first time in our history that our football is keeping on improving in world and Asian rankings and I hope we’ll continue to progress,” he commented.
However, it would be injustice if one does not praise the sincere efforts, made by foreign coach John Layton of England, who turned the tide in favour of Pakistan football after getting three junior teams qualified for Asian final rounds and securing first ever point in World Cup 2002 qualifying rounds.
He has been released by the PFF after the suspension of AFC aid programme. Let’s see what steps would the PFF hierarchy take to keep on lightening the lantern, illuminated by the foreigner. As per the FIFA Ranking, Pakistan is above 26 countries amongst 203 FIFA members.
