Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

After trying to get pregnant for 3 years, I went to see my ob/gyn. He said I wasn’t ovulating! He put me on clomid, but it didn’t work. He also put me on something else which starts with an “M” (can’t remember) and that didn’t work either. So he referred me to a fertility clinic.

Well that was 6 months ago and now my appointment is coming up next month. I am a bit nervous and don’t know what to expect. Should I bring my husband with me? Will this just be a consult and then I will be called in for some testing in 3-4 months again? Would he be putting me on some other drugs before trying IVF or is IVF a last resort?

If anyone has been through this and could share what happened when they went to a clinic, it would be appreciated!

P.S. Sorry if this topic has been posted before.

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

I dont think you have to bring your husband for your first visit but would be nice even if its just for moral support. They'll likely want to see that he's producing healthy sperm so its good to bring his medical records along too.

Depending on the reasons why you arent ovulating, there is a hope that you wont need to resort to IVF. I had the same problem, clomid didnt work for me either. I went on to injectible fertility meds and this did the trick. It was lots of trips to the clinic, they monitor follicle growth and hormone levels every other day for the first 2 weeks of the cycle so that they can adjust the meds up or down as necessary.

I wish you the very best!

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

it's so scary to know that infertility is a common problem. isn't it costly to go through IVF? this might sound like a dumb question but is it possible for someone to not ovulate even if they get their period?

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

Mamaof3: thanks for the info; did the injections hurt and where do they inject?

Larki: it costs about $6K for IVF but i think there is a 75% refund if you don't get pregnant, depending on which centre.

I think in Canada it is covered by the provincial health care. This is what the nurse told me on the phone that the "procedures" I would probably be getting are covered and I shouldn't worry.

And yes it is possible not to ovulate and get your period. I have been taking birth control pills since grade 5 to keep my cycle regular but my doctor told me I am not ovulating. It is all confusing to me.

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

since grade 5? how come you got put on it so young? my doctor told me it's normal for girls to have irregular period in the beginning for the first two years or so.....thanks for answering my questions.

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

I'm on a course of Clomid at the moment but doubt that I could put up with taking it for three years. I hope I won't have to.

Have you had a laparoscopy yet?

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

Hi Ruiner: First of all I am sorry that you have to go through this and i know it takes its toll on a persons mental and physical health.
I also have my first IVF consult next month. It is very expensive but luckily our insurance covers some parts of it. There are so many women these days having infertility issues. It has a lot to do with ovulation problems. Yes, a woman can have regular cycles but no ovulation. I was also put on clomid and did not work for me. I did ovulate but did not get pregnant with it.

Shahreen: You should only be on clomid for a maximum of six months. Anything more than that is very very bad for your ovaries.

Ruiner: Rule out every issue first before you go in for IVF. Is everything normal with your hubby?? Maybe you can ask the infertility specialist to put you on injectibles and than do an Interauterine insemination a few months before you move forward with IVF. Good Luck! Don't worry turn to Allah for His help. There are a lot of us in the same situation!

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

Mahru - Between 6 and 12 months is the average for being on Clomid. I'm still on my first course but was surprised that Ruiner was taking it for three years as like you, I was led to believe it can be damaging when taken long term.

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

When you do a course of injectible fertility meds, you get one injection each day starting with the first day of your cycle. You inject in the hip (in the US they show you how to do it yourself, not sure about canada). As a needle-phobic, I thought I'd never be able to do it but it really wasnt bad. The needles are really small. Anyway, the first 8-10 days is this "follicle stimulation", monitored closely to keep an eye on when follicles are ripe and that not too many are ripening. Then you do a big shot of HCG which makes the eggs release. Then you can go au-natural, you can try insemination or they can extract the eggs for ivf.

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies…

Not for three years, I was trying for three years naturally, then my doctor put me on chlomid. I only did 2 months on that. Then he did tests to see if I was ovulating after that, which I wasn’t.

Thanks for the comments, now I don’t feel so alone ! Good luck Mahru and Shahreen.

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

...just a sugggestion for the clomid users. when women don't ovulate, they rarely produce enough cervical mucous to allow the little swimmers to get to their destination. So they end up "stuck" in the cervical canal. Many infertility docs are using plain Robitussin (guanefisin I think is the generic name). Its typically used as a cough remedy to thin out mucous in the lungs but its also been found to thin out and encourage cervical musous.

sorry to be graphic but I've heard many success stories with this so thought I'd share....

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

oops, p.s. the typical dose is 1 tbsp a day.

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

I just wanted to add that grapefruit helps very much with the cervical mucus while on clomid.

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies…

wow..the things we learn…

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

hi guys..its been a while since i was last on..i still owe u a pm mahru...anyways...someone said IVF was covered in canada..nope! not even one red penny is covered by the cdn govt...it all depends on what insurance company ur work has..i have great west life..and they said they can cover some part of it...with the drugs and all...its like 8-10 thousand dollars!! i knwo its crazy!!
i thought i was the only one with fertility issues, but actually it gives me relief that other couples here have issues...im not happy about it of course, but just good to know that im not going throuigh this alone..cuz no one in myf amily understands..they are all baby machines..i think we shodul have a forum dedicated to infertiltiy...what u think?

anyways..good luck to all of u trying to get preg..ive heard that cough s yrup is good..as well as baby aspirin..i will try to find that li nk....

by the way , the clinic i go to is mississauga...astra fertility..
but like mahru said..check out all ur options before u proceed with ivf..both the male and female factors....

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

Please everyone never start taking baby aspirin on your own. Consult your physician first. Normally the docs prescribe to those who have blood clotting issues. In some cases it helps but in others it can be very detrimental for the fetus. So be careful and do your research first before starting anything. It is always good to start taking your prenatal vitamins not the regular ones because they have too much Vitamin A which is also not good for the baby. So anyone who is trying start your prenatals and folic acid beforehand.

Good Luck!

MFS555- don't worry I know you are busy. Email me when you have time! I understand.

Re: Fertility Clinic - For Married Guppies...

The irony of all this is that as a girl I was always had the message drilled into me that it was so easy to get pregnant and thats why you must never talk to boys. Haha.
