ill answer the sunnah part later on but as a doctor this much i know.sometimes the labia majora r too damn big n close the vagina like curtains,also they cause sweat accumulation and infection and so its preferrable to have them trimmed,the key word being trimmed.secondly sometimes the hood of the clitoris is so hard n large that the woman cannot achieve orgasm.in islam there r authentic hadiths which tell a man that he must wait for a woman even after he has done ejaculating and that for sex one shud start with piyar or kissing(foreplay: for it is known that for a woman sex is very much different {and the receptors r not just concentrated around the genitalia but all over the body unlike a man and the mind ofcourse}and not dive down for vagina and have intercourse without any regards to the womans pleasure.so from the medical point of view its necessary sometimes.

According to Sayyid Sabiq, renowned scholar and author of Fiqh-us-Sunnah, all hadiths concerning female circumcision are non-authentic.
If a Muslim truly believes that female circumcision is part of the Sunnah, she or he wouldn't have enough detailed specifications to know how to carry out the procedure since the terms mentioned are so vague.
ANOTHER PROFF THAT IT IS NOT AN ISLAMIC PRACTICE:female circumcision never became widespread among Muslims around the world

WHy is it that people don't read and mouth off without a ounce of knowledge? FGM is an african practice, commonly found in sub-saharan africa and not the arab nations. Rather it is found in predominantly christain nations. That does not mean it is linked to christainity rather that it is not accepted practice in Islamic countries.
