Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

Is it a right move? Can someone restrict any cultural / linguistic invasion through such options?

Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans cartoon on TV | Firstpost

Dhaka: Bangladesh has banned Hindi-dubbed version of the popular Japanese cartoon ‘Doraemon’ from its TV screens over fears that youngsters hooked to it might struggle to learn their native tongue Bengali.

Bangladesh’s Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu told the Parliament yesterday “the government doesn’t want children’s educational atmosphere to get vitiated due to the telecast of Doraemon.”

The government has already issued notices directing to stop the telecast of unapproved foreign satellite television channels like Disney, Disney XD and Pogo. So, the airing of the children’s favourite cartoon Doraemon has been banned,” he added.

Ruling Awami League lawmaker Shahriar Alam last week demanded immediate ban on airing of the cartoon Doraemon in the country. He had said television stations should air foreign cartoons after dubbing them in ‘Bangla’.

Apprehending negative effect of the cartoon, Alam said that** this type of cartoons might change the mother tongue in the future. He went on to say ‘Doraemon’ serial only taught about telling lies and speaking Hindi.
**

He said the cartoon serials should teach the children about the moral and religious values and motivate them for education.

Bangladesh is particularly sensitive about the cultural impact of its influential neighbour India with millions of households preferring to watch Hindi-language television beamed in via satellite. Nationalist sentiment in the country is particularly high with the ‘International Mother Language Day’, observed on Feb 21, just round the corner.

Created by manga artist Fujiko F. Fujio, Doraemon revolves around a robotic cat who travels back in time from the 22nd century to aid a pre-teen boy, Nobita.

Japanese foreign ministry appointed Doraemon as its first “anime ambassador” in 2008 in an effort to deepen foreign interest in Japanese culture.

i think its the right of the government if they think its hurting their culture.

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

But can someone restrict such invasion, when people got alternate resources in today's time?

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

How it hurts?? My kiddos can speak both Kashmiri and Hindi impeccably :)
I can understand hindi and urdu competition as both of them are very similar to hear, but bengali is entirely different in dialect as well :)

Well Doremon and Lobita are generally favourite, though oogy and cockroaches is even better :D

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

I agree with you that in this day and age its not possible to censor as many alternate ways are available to access information. Having said that I am in favor of some checks/censorships to protect local cultures. Bangladesh doesn't have that much to fear as most people don't understand Hindi. The biggest casualty in this would be Pakistan, with Cartoon Network, Star Plus and National Geographic beaming their programs in Hindi. What is government of Pakistan doing to protect Urdu from the onslaught?

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

Do Bengalis detest English to same extent?

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

We should do the same

I hate doremon and i don't allow kids to watch it

Safeguard,milkateers are waybetter

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

Again same question, why ignore or afraid of Hindi, when we know that English is imposed in our institutions. specially considering the fact that Hindi is the base for Urdu

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

Like Punjabi is loosing there to Urdu, now Urdu will lose to Hindi :D, now Punjabis in Pakistan must know what they want to preserve :D

Bengalis just hate each other :D

Anyways, Indian Bengalis aren't complaining about such things :), they might be detesting english too else their kids may become angrez :D

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

English is an international language we like it or not its important for us to know it if we want to compete on the international level. The cultural onslaught is not limited to the language only. I have read articles in the newspapers where children are asking their parents when will the bride and groom take the seven pheray or when the grand father's chitta would be burnt.

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

Cartoons should me made keeping in mind that kids pick up things from it and try to follow it.In case of Doremon I would say a Big No because it's not just hindi language but the cartoon itself. They are not appropriate for kids when there are other options available too.

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

I myself grew up watching "Small Wonder" tele series in Hindi, I hardly understood english then

It was "Shaktiman" that took me away from small wonder, I believe if native production is good, these all foreign things hardly matters :)

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

With due respect to Hindi I find it indecent compared to Urdu :bummer:

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

But, we can't let kids have their own choice when there is something better to watch.

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

“kahe lalli, tohe mahi hindi pasand nahi aaut” the way my bhahi speaks, it looks so sweet, you should learn braj dialect.
I don’t mind if my kiddos can learn Urdu

you are the parent, you must decide, what is good for them, in my case, my saas decides

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

then tell them what is correct and appropriate, it is not as big an issue, elders make out it to be. I always thought that "all big dhadhi waala muslims have four wives :D ", now adulthood has washed this conviction away. More they grow they will get to know of their identity and will come on track :)

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

i am not the parent…i am the khala:p

i was talkin about my niece and nephew:halo:

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

what is braj?

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

Re: Fearing Hindi invasion, Bangladesh bans Hindi dubbed cartoon

In Sikhi Khala is called Maasi, means Like mother
