Re: Fear of Public Speaking
Practice with few people first. Encourage them to ask questions.
I know some people take meds to slow the heart rate (beta blockers).
Have command on the topic.
Re: Fear of Public Speaking
tell yourself you are confident!
look for opportunities to practice, so you can iron out any problems before a big occasion
Practice makes perfect.
Medication should be avoided unless its a nervous breakdown or something.
Always recite a few surahs beforehand, namely Ayat-al-Kursi.
Look up google for detailed articles or even buy a book called “How to conquer public speaking fear” by Morton C. Orman.
there is no textbook “fix” to this issue
the only person who can help you is “YOU”
as they say “the only thing to fear is “fear” itself”
Sheyn you are not alone ![]()
I used to be an expert at fainting and sweating and uttering total gibberish when I was asked to do any presentation etc. I have had my share of extremely embarrasing situations. But i have improved a lot.
Still get goosebumps sometimes ![]()
Re: Fear of Public Speaking
I started with participating in meetings which I just arranged, then started to speak up and ask questions and then started to do presentations.
Just take a dive and you will be good .
Remember your first solo drive. I am sure your hands and legs were shaking and your heart was pounding when you drove solo . But now it is a cinch to drive , same thing is true for public speaking , in first few instances you will be shaking then you will be confident and composed.

***What Changed Jamie Unkil ?
Did U just finally get used to it after doing a zillion presentations ?
Just the thought if having to give a presentation is giving me sleepless nights ![]()
Re: Fear of Public Speaking
sheyn there is always nervousness..it becomes less and you become more able to deal with it.
the issue for public speaking for many people is that they want to be too structured and worry about forgetting stuff, and if they stumble, then worry about trying to recover because their game plan is messed up.
know your material, have an approach in mind, if you have some specific phrases you want to use, write them down.
people are there listening because you have something to say that they want to listen to,
a little humour works, even if you mess up, people will stumble and try to recover and tripping over their own words..people know you missed something or messed up but its painful to see you fumble, but if you just just inject a little humour in it.
Re: Fear of Public Speaking
***For me its not about forgetting what I have to say or not knowing my subject ,its just the whole idea of speaking in front of a crowd makes me faint !
The couple of times I did it in the past , I literally had Status asthmaticus , shallow breathing , palpitations , my heart was racing so fast , and my voice just wouldn’t come out .
I have presented several times within the department and i’m usually quite vocal during meetings , and i’m able to present my ideas well , its just when it comes to being told U got to stand up and give a presentation is when that phobia kicks in ! I get paralyzed with fear and the worst thing is no one believes me when I tell them this…![]()

Re: Fear of Public Speaking
Even the most practiced speakers have anxiety the first time they face a new audience, so there’s nothing wrong with that (did you read my last blog post
) I’ve been a public speaker for more than 10 years now… you do get better over time.
Over the years, two things which I’ve noticed in all good presentations are a presenter’s handle on his/her specialty style and engagement method, and these you only realize over time.
e.g. are you good at being casual or formal – part of this is going to depend on the context of your presentation, but I’ve seen both styles work well even within similar circumstances. For me personally, I prefer being formal with bits of casual, spontaneous moments interspersed at regular intervals.
Secondly, what’s your modus oper-andi to engage your audience – some people use jokes, others do storytelling really well (think, Steve Jobs)… for me, it’s examples and demos which I enjoy showing, and the audience typically enjoys them while I show them. The engagement bit needs to be really something that you’re good at and you enjoy doing – your audience will typically catch on that vibe and get immersed in that experience with you.
I’m not saying that it’s just these two things, but these two things are a good start. Include these criteria while you think about the key ingredients of your presentation, and complete this thought exercise ahead of time to devise your agenda. However, like someone said, don’t overdo the planning… sometimes it can make you nervous if you have to improvise. You should always leave opportunities for spontaneity. I’m awful when it comes to rehearsing ahead of time… I almost never do it, and I work best if I’m doing my preps until the last minute. Different strokes for different folks - really.
