Fazl leaves for India today

We should always give credit where its due.. Maulana’s visit is significant since MMA s usally looked as anti-India group… we need to erace the inherent hate and venom these 2 countries had since inception and divert meagre resources to betterment of huge populations rather than wasting on arsenals.. and demoralize those elements in both countries that only thrive in hate and war..

ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary goodwill delegation, led by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of the Jamat-e-Ulema-e-Islam, (JUI-F), leaves for New Delhi today (Tuesday) with the hope of creating an environment in which both India and Pakistan can resolve their problems.

“We have been invited by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and together with me will be Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, Qazi Hamidullah from Gujranwala and Senator Gul Naseem from Dir. It is a goodwill visit,” Fazl told The News before he left for Lahore. The delegation will leave by the Wagah border and first visit Sarhind in the Indian Punjab before going to New Delhi and later to Deoband.

“We will meet parliamentarians, politicians, government officials, members from the Islamist parties and others. Our aim will be creating an environment where all issues between the two countries can be resolved peacefully through dialogue,” Fazl said. Agencies add: In an interview with Reuters, Fazl said: “We are going there with a message of goodwill on behalf of the Pakistani people, all the religious circles and the political parties,” but added that he would not be taking any official message with him.

“Our intention is to meet the people there, to meet the religious circles, political and government circles and hold frank discussions with them,” he said. “We want to be helpful in creating an atmosphere which leads to resolving the mutual disputes.”

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind said he will also visit the Sikhs’ Golden Temple and an Islamic religious school before arriving in New Delhi on Wednesday evening. A reception was scheduled for Fazl in New Delhi on Friday. “We will meet with Hindu and Sikh leaders and Ulema in India. We will speak about peace between the two countries,” Fazl’s spokesman Hafiz Hussain Ahmed said.

:k: A great move indeed by the MMA.

Though I have to say, given the sheer amount of wheeling-and-dealing between Jamali’s government and the MMA, I just can’t help but suspect that Maulana Rehman is being sent out as an “unofficial” envoy by Islamabad…

This probably is a personal trip. Many Deobandi maulanas visit their spiritual capital of Deoband before certain critical decisions in their life. Fazlur Rehman is also going to Deoband.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes a big personal/political decisions after this visit. Jamali’s time is up. Could it be that Maulana Diesel becomes the next PM?

Talwar, don't sully the name of Deoband in the name of politics...If your a true Indian then you should know that the Madrassas of Deoband are the most apolitical in South Asia.

I found that statement highly offensive as your trying to imply that Deoband is some sort of mazar/ hindu temple where you ponder your decisions. It is a center for learning the tenets of Islam with a specific interpretation.

You don't see me insulting any Hindu shrines, do you?

Re: Fazl leaves for India today

^

JUH is a piece of garbage organization. Maulana Rehman is making a mockery of his beliefs by turning to Deoband like Data Sahib’s mazar :mad2:

On another note, its a welcome sight to see our conservatives go to India. Why is Fazlur Rehman called Maulana Diesal, just curious?

Because of his alleged (I don't know if it was proven in a court of law) involvement a couple years ago in illegally smuggling diesel oil across the Pak-Afghan frontier - a pretty lucrative scheme.

RF,

Fazlur Rehman has visited Deoband before and I remember his own words during one of his visits in the mid 1990s where he said that he likes to go to Deoband to seek spiritual guidance.

No offence intended. I'm well aware that Deoband is a centre for learning.

You just did up above. Hindu temples are not someplace where yu just ponder your decisions. Practice what you preach..nudnik!

MMA are a waste of time.

shalwar, now you know better yar, politicians are playing their games, nothing to do with deoband…

p.s. nice to see ya back!

Spocky,

Thanks for the welcome back. I was blocked by my company's firewall from accessing discussion boards.

I just found out a way to beat it :D

I second the welcome back Talwar!

I read somewhere (I maybe wrong) that the Deoband movement in India is very different and inclusive compared to it's moreexclusive Pakistani off shoots?

Zakk,

Thanks.

Actually, you might have read an article in NY Times about Deoband alst year.

Since NY Times archives are now fee based, I’ll post in full.

:) :)

I was interested in your views about him visiting India, lets assume for now hes on a diplomatic mission, do you welcome his move?

Sure. Things can only improve by such visits. Maulana Fazl has a lot of resources under his command. One cannot underestimate his clout. If India has to make any concessions, then it is best done by a BJP govt. Simlarly, any Pakistani concessions will be best done by Army with the backing of the maulanas.

Like I said before, he is a moron if he thinks deoband is some sort of a shrine. He can either teach there or learn, so I don't see where this whole "spiritual guidance" comes from?

CH,
First off, I speaking within the context of Politicos going to a mandir or a Mazar, so I never said a hindu temple is where you JUST ponder decisions.

Secondly, find me one pious and practical Hindu taking offense over the fact that many hindu politicians go to temple to ponder there decisions and I'll gladly take my statements back.

Nothing wrong with pondering decisions in a place of worship if your faith allows. If you understand the deoband thought and set up, this sounds hypocritical.

I agree..in deobandi thought looking towards people, places or things as a conduit or as some good luck charm is not okay.

Then I guess moderate Indians like yourself have no objection to his visit, and I guess this is a great move by the Maulana. Maybe the Maulana will soften up, let go of some of the objectionable stuff, and this may turn out to be good news for both of us.

Who would believe is, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the ambassador of peace :)
